The Gastroenterology Lab is a division of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and carries out research on gastrointestinal diseases broadly, from basic research to clinical research. The lab is divided into groups that each handle diseases of one organ: the upper gastrointestinal tract, the lower gastrointestinal tract, the pancreas, and the liver. In the professor's greeting, clinical care, research, and education are described as an indispensable trinity, and the lab aims to bring research results back into patient care. Many residents in specialty training and graduate students are active on the front lines of research and clinical care.

The Artificial Intelligence in Medical Science Lab analyzes medical data of differing nature, such as genomes, medical images, and clinical records, across AI, mathematics, and medical science. The lab aims to elucidate disease mechanisms, discover new treatments, and build systems for choosing the treatment best suited to each individual patient. Research is carried out at two sites: the Seiryo Campus in Sendai and RIKEN in Tokyo. Another goal of the lab is to reconnect the different expertise of medicine, information science, and mathematical science, and to create a place where people can discuss across disciplinary boundaries.

The lab conducts research that helps build the infrastructure needed to advance genomic medicine. It works on human resource development through its own educational programs, aimed at the many types of professionals involved in the genome cohort studies run by the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization. It is also developing SNP arrays tailored to genome analysis of the Japanese population and collecting large-scale data. The lab also studies the mechanisms of inflammatory diseases, focusing on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and biotin.

The lab studies various areas of rehabilitation medicine from both clinical and basic perspectives. It was formed in 2024 by merging the Division of Physical Disabilities and the Division of Internal Disorders. Graduate students are diverse: in addition to physicians, they include nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language-hearing therapists, registered dietitians, and health and fitness instructors, and there are many international students. Rehabilitation medicine is described as medicine that stays close to patients, continuing to search for ways to bring even some improvement to diseases and disabilities that cannot be cured.

The Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics lab works on the development of pharmaceuticals and software as a medical device (SaMD) that uses artificial intelligence (AI). The lab carries out its research and development using the Medicinal Hub, Tohoku University's open innovation hub. As treatment approaches become more diverse, combining engineering and information technologies with chemistry and biology is considered important. The lab's website also introduces it under the names "Miyata Lab" and "Medicinal Hub."

The Medical Engineering and Cardiology lab studies biomedical engineering that supports bodily functions with artificial organs, such as artificial hearts and mechanical circulatory support. The lab is located in the Center for Promotion of Nonclinical Studies at Tohoku University's Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, and is involved with both the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and the Graduate School of Medicine. The lab's website states that the world's first ultrasound cardiac tomography (echocardiography) was invented in this lab. The website also says that the lab is recruiting doctoral and master's students.

The Integrative Genomic Predictive Medicine lab studies the prediction and prevention of disease based on genome and epigenome information from the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project. The lab considers the genome, which cannot be changed, together with the epigenome and lifestyle habits, which can, and aims to link them to early intervention. The lab works on research that assesses biological age with epigenetic clocks, and research that examines the relationship between polygenic scores and lifestyle habits. The lab also promotes education and outreach on genome research, statistical genetics, and aging research.

The lab is in charge of the community-based cohort study of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project. It evaluates risk factors for conditions such as cardiovascular disease and depression, which are feared to increase as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and feeds the results back to the people who took part in the study. By evaluating combinations of constitution, genes, and environmental factors, the lab aims to develop future-oriented medicine that contributes to establishing new preventive methods and treatments.

The Exercise Science Lab uses physical activity, exercise, sports, nutrition, diet, and lifestyle as its keywords, working to improve physical performance, including athletic performance, and to solve health-related problems. Research is carried out using knowledge and techniques from a wide range of fields, from the cellular level to the population level, depending on the research theme. On the lab's website, it is introduced under two names: the "Sports and Health Science" division in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and the "Exercise Science" division in the Graduate School of Medicine. Students are free to choose their own research themes and are not limited to the lab's current main themes.

Muneaki Shimada, Professor

The Integrated Clinical Analysis Lab belongs to the Division of Medical Science in the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and is located in the Future Medicine Creation Center. Prof. Shimada is in charge of the lab, and the research field listed in the researcher directory is obstetrics and gynecology. The research keywords that Prof. Shimada has registered on researchmap include gynecologic cancers such as ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, cancer pharmacotherapy, clinical trials, palliative care, and angiogenic factors. In the Graduate School of Medicine's list of labs, the Division of Medical Science is shown with a master's program and a doctoral program.
