The Antibody Drug Discovery Lab studies how to produce antibodies against a variety of cancer-related molecules and apply them to antibody-based cancer therapy. The lab's website describes the production of antibodies targeting molecules such as HER2, CD44, and podoplanin, as well as research toward treatments for breast cancer, brain tumors, and lung cancer. Research on treatment using CAR-T cells is also described. The lab's website also presents the lab under the name "Kato Lab."

The Palliative Medicine Lab is engaged in clinical practice, research, and education in palliative care. The professor explains that palliative care is for all patients suffering from serious illness and their families, and is not limited to end-of-life care. The national government is working to promote "palliative care from the time of cancer diagnosis," and the professor states that even for curable diseases, it is important to adequately relieve suffering from the early stages. In the greeting on taking office in 2015, the professor named educating medical students and young doctors in palliative medicine and conducting high-quality clinical research as the lab's roles, and said the lab will strive to send out high-quality evidence from Tohoku.

The Center for Regional Cancer Care Promotion is established within the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and examines the characteristics and problems of cancer care in Miyagi Prefecture. The center was established to promote exchange of specialized medical personnel, to provide the latest diagnostic technologies such as clinical trials and genetic diagnosis, and to develop and advance a network of patient groups, cancer counseling, and palliative care. Considering that Miyagi Prefecture, with its aging society and the concentration of cancer care resources in urban areas, may be regarded as a microcosm of Japan as a whole, the center aims to revitalize regional cancer care using this prefecture as a model. The center's website introduces the Tohoku Wide-Area Next-Generation Cancer Professional Training Plan, and the center houses its secretariat.

The Regional Oral Health Science Lab studies the relationship between oral diseases and systemic diseases. Periodontal disease is deeply involved in the onset and exacerbation of diabetes, preterm birth, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders. Using multi-omics information, including human genome, metabolome, and metagenome data collected in the large-scale cohort studies of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, together with lifestyle, health, and medical information, the lab analyzes the associations between the oral environment and various diseases. By analyzing diseases from multiple perspectives to clarify their pathology, the lab aims to improve the quality not only of dental care but of medical care as a whole.

The Oxygen Medicine lab studies how cells regulate gene activity and energy metabolism in hypoxic environments, where oxygen is insufficient. In solid tumors, cells can survive even when abnormal blood vessels cause the oxygen supply to be interrupted or unstable. Using genetically modified mice and biochemical methods, the lab investigates these mechanisms at the molecular level. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Division of Creation of New Medical Fields (Oxygen Medicine Core Center, Suzuki Lab)."

The Clinical Pharmacy lab investigates the effects and side effects of drug therapy through clinical research and experiments. Under the motto "Through two-way dialogue between pharmacy and medicine," the lab holds that a broad understanding of clinical medicine is essential for studying pharmacy. The lab aims for students to ultimately acquire the expertise, and the ability to communicate with clinical care teams in practice.

The Health Data Informatics division is the lab of Prof. Ogishima at the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization. The lab lists bioinformatics and medical informatics as its research keywords. Prof. Ogishima also serves as head of the organization's Integrated Database Office. In the course "Data Management I," Prof. Ogishima lectures on the integrated database at the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization.

The Disaster Public Health and Molecular Epidemiology divisions study preparedness for large-scale disasters, health promotion across the life course, and the mechanisms of multifactorial diseases. Using large-scale epidemiological surveys, the lab examines topics such as the growth of children in the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the relationship between mold and dust mites in temporary housing and allergy symptoms. As the foundation of its research, the lab conducts the Birth Three-Generation Cohort Study, a study design that is the first of its kind in the world. Using molecular epidemiology methods that analyze genome information and other data with artificial intelligence techniques, the lab searches for the causes of multifactorial diseases such as autism spectrum disorder.

The Medical Informatics field (Nakayama Lab) upholds “practical medical informatics” and researches information systems that are useful in healthcare settings. The lab explores hospital information systems and regional healthcare collaboration systems that are useful in clinical practice. It also works on developing Personal Health Records, building data infrastructure that supports clinical research, and using medical AI. Promoting standardization in Japan and abroad and responding to disasters are also among its challenges.

The Biological Information Analysis field is a lab that aims to understand complex biological phenomena by analyzing large-scale data. The lab handles everything in an integrated way, from experimental design through large-scale measurement to data analysis, and combines experiments, multi-omics, and computational science to approach the principles of biological regulation. It works on host dysfunction caused by cancer, the effects of daily stress on disease and aging, and the effects of using robots, avatars, and devices on the body. The lab is located at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, Tohoku University, and also has a research team at the Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University.
