The Periodontology Lab is a clinical department responsible for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease (alveolar pyorrhea). Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria living at the boundary between the teeth and gums, and is a disease in which the periodontal tissue supporting the teeth is gradually lost. The lab investigates how periodontal disease develops and progresses, and, based on that knowledge, researches and develops new tests, diagnostic methods, and treatments. Recently, the lab has been developing treatments that regenerate periodontal tissue lost to periodontal disease.

The Regenerative Prosthodontics Lab is a clinical dentistry lab that conducts research aimed at restoring oral function in patients who have lost dental or jaw tissue. Building on advances in regenerative medicine and biomaterials, the lab pursues tissue regeneration research centered on somatic stem cells. The core of its research is the development of new medical devices and diagnostic technologies that are grounded in biology and go beyond conventional prosthodontics. At the Department of Oral Prosthodontics and the Oral Implant Center of the university hospital, the lab also treats patients with tooth or tissue loss that is difficult for general dental clinics to handle.

The Removable Prosthodontics and Gerodontology Lab conducts basic and clinical research related to removable dentures and dentistry for older adults. Its goal is predictive dentistry based on data science, and it also conducts research on implant-supported prosthodontics. Taking advantage of being part of a comprehensive university, the lab collaborates with a wide range of fields such as medicine and engineering, pursuing epidemiological surveys, AI, and mechanical experiments. Formerly called the Second Department of Prosthodontics, the lab was founded in 1953 (Showa 28).

The Comprehensive Dentistry Lab (Division of Comprehensive Dental Care) manages clinical clerkships and clinical residency at Osaka University School of Dentistry and its Dental Hospital. It also provides comprehensive care spanning multiple specialties and conducts research based on the various questions encountered in dental practice. Its research covers methods for observing hard tissues, age-related changes in dentin, and systems for dental education.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Lab conducts basic and clinical research centered on congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate, and on jaw deformities. Research in this lab also includes translational research aimed at clarifying disease mechanisms and developing new treatments. For oral cancer as well, the lab works with other institutions on developing diagnostic support systems aimed at early detection and early treatment, and on clarifying the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and metastasis. With the goal of training academic surgeons in the maxillofacial and oral region, the lab is also involved in undergraduate education, graduate education, and postgraduate clinical training.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Oncologic Surgery Lab is in charge of oral and maxillofacial surgery, which clarifies the causes of diseases of the jaw and oral cavity and links that knowledge to treatment. The lab carries out clinical care, education, and research on diseases such as congenital anomalies, jaw deformities, trauma, inflammation, tumors, and mucosal diseases. In the graduate school, the lab teaches Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology as the main subject and Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as the secondary subject, making tumors a priority area for both clinical work and research. Its research addresses the mechanisms of lymph node metastasis in oral cancer, new molecular targeted therapies, and more.

The Dental Radiology Lab studies radiation therapy for oral cancer and head and neck cancer, and diagnostic imaging using CT and MRI. The oral cavity, and the tongue in particular, is involved in many functions such as mastication, swallowing, speech, and taste, so radiation therapy that can preserve function is often the first-choice treatment for cancer. The lab is equipped with a linac, the only external beam radiotherapy unit at the Dental Hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Dentistry, and uses it to treat patients with oral cancer and head and neck cancer. In diagnostic imaging, MRI and CT are used to comprehensively diagnose not only hard tissues such as teeth and jawbones but also soft tissues such as muscles, blood vessels, and mucosa.

Dental anesthesiology, the field this lab covers, centers on general anesthesia and applies its knowledge and techniques to patient management during dental care. The lab explains that administering general anesthesia is, in essence, the regulation of the body's physiological responses. People who are extremely afraid of dental treatment can be given sedatives so that they can receive treatment comfortably. Even people with severe heart disease, for whom dental treatment is considered risky, can be treated safely while their cardiac function is evaluated on monitors.

The lab conducts basic and clinical research on dental caries and periodontal disease, which are among the dental diseases that occur from infancy through adolescence. The lab is responsible for pediatric dentistry lectures and practical training for undergraduate and graduate students, and also provides dental treatment for child patients at the pediatric dentistry clinic of the Dental Hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Dentistry. For Streptococcus mutans, a bacterium that causes dental caries, the lab examines how its surface structures relate to virulence. The lab analyzes how bacteria in the mouth relate to systemic diseases, using samples such as those removed during cardiovascular surgery.

The lab studies the growth and development of the teeth and face, jaw movement, and related topics in the field of orthodontics. Orthodontics is a field that seeks the factors that create the optimal natural-teeth occlusal relationship in order to achieve an attractive mouth and stable occlusal function. Research areas in orthodontics range from the perception of facial shape and expression, to the morphogenesis of bone and teeth, the control of jaw movement, and pain control. The lab also works to train leading professionals who can succeed in Japan and abroad and carry orthodontic care forward in the 21st century.
