The Urban Regeneration Management Lab (Kaga Lab) studies the revitalization of cities and community building with citizen participation. Its research is based on the recognition that there is a growing need for "sustainable community building": rather than starting to plan after something happens, people consider the future of their familiar surroundings on an ongoing, everyday basis. Research themes begin when students form their own questions out of their interest in and awareness of urban planning issues. Drawing on the knowledge and experience they gain in lectures, students also take part in projects on site.

The Urban Co-creation Design Lab studies and puts into practice strategies for creating, together with people, the places, things, experiences, and moments that enrich society, with cities and towns as its field. The lab holds that phenomena occurring in cities and towns arise from complex factors amid diversifying values, lifestyles, social systems, science and technology, and ethics. Specifically, it studies the role of people who engage with a region from outside, mechanisms for community building with resident participation, and the evaluation of comfort and pedestrian circulation in cities and towns. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Urban Co-creation Design Lab (Takeda Lab)."

The Future Design Lab is the lab of Prof. Keishiro Hara in the Department of Business Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. "Future Design" refers to designing, and putting into practice, social systems for passing on a sustainable society to future generations. Prof. Hara participates, as a faculty member from the Osaka University side, in the Mobility Systems Joint Research Chair, which studies the future of electric power with mobility taken into account. In the Industry-Academia-Government Co-creation Course in which this chair takes part, Prof. Hara serves as a mentor.

In addition to advancing research capability, the Industry-Academia-Government Co-Creation Area works with joint research chairs and collaborative research institutes to bring on-campus industry-academia joint research activities into education. These activities are called Internship on Campus (IoC). Students experience industry within the university through research activities and develop practical skills. The area also develops a big-picture perspective for business development, covering markets, customers, and roadmaps, as well as the collaborative skills needed to manage joint research. This website is a guide to the entire Industry-Academia-Government Co-Creation Course, which trains industry-oriented and entrepreneurship-oriented doctoral-level professionals, and it introduces two types: the IoC type and the Entrepreneurship type.

The 3DPTec Integrated Center is a center attached to the Graduate School of Engineering, established in April 2026 as a hub for manufacturing and creation centered on 3DP (three-dimensional printing). To the medical devices, aerospace components, and functional catalysts covered by its predecessor center, it has added future food, artificial organs, large offshore wind turbines, and art. The center is run with the cooperation of researchers from the Graduate School of Engineering, as well as from SANKEN (The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research), the University Hospital, the Research Center for Ultra-High Voltage Electron Microscopy, the International Center for Biotechnology, and the Nakanoshima Art Center. Its mission is to pursue the underlying science, contribute to society, and develop human resources.

The Photonics Center is a center attached to the Graduate School of Engineering that provides a place for education, research, and information exchange in photonics, a field spanning a wide range of disciplines. Osaka University is known as a mecca of photonics research, and labs that cross graduate school and department boundaries, along with many companies, participate in the center. The center has advanced cutting-edge scientific research on nanophotonics and plasmonics and its application and industrialization, together with human resource development and international exchange. It is currently promoting MEXT's Photonics Life Science R&D Hub (COI-NEXT), which began in fiscal 2022 (Reiwa 4).

Keishiro Hara's lab studies Future Design, which designs and puts into practice social systems for passing a sustainable society on to future generations. Combining engineering with social psychology and economics, the lab investigates how mechanisms such as "imaginary future generations" change human decision-making and consensus building. The lab works with stakeholders such as local governments, government agencies, and industry, and also carries out practical projects in urban development, carbon neutrality, and disaster prevention. A defining feature of the lab is that it pursues theoretical research and real-world practice in tandem.

The Koji Mold Breeding Engineering endowed chair studies the genetic changes that occurred as koji mold was domesticated from wild fungi. Koji mold has enzymes that break down large amounts of starch and protein, and the lab also investigates the mechanisms that control how these enzymes are produced. The lab also studies how wild fungi survive in the wild, exploring the possibility of obtaining strains with high enzyme activity or strong environmental tolerance. It is an endowed chair established in October 2021 in the Division of Advanced Science and Biotechnology, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University.

The Advanced Maritime System Design Joint Research Chair (Osaka University OCEANS) conducts fundamental research on design, construction, and operation systems for high-performance next-generation ships, aiming to strengthen the international competitiveness of Japan's maritime industry. It is a chair operated jointly by Imabari Shipbuilding, Japan Marine United, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), and MTI of the NYK Group. Its targets include alternative-fuel ships and autonomous ships, and the lab studies ship design, construction, and operation using automated design and AI technology. Nihon Shipyard also takes part in the design and engineering research activities that this chair carries out.

The Offshore Wind Turbine System Integration Joint Research Chair integrates technologies related to offshore wind turbines through joint research, working to promote the industrialization of offshore wind power and the development of human resources. Established in March 2023, the lab aims to be a driving force in creating a new offshore wind turbine industry in Japan toward carbon neutrality by 2050. Because technologies related to offshore wind turbines span a wide range of fields, the lab holds that these elements must be integrated for the industry to grow into a large-scale one. Its listed research themes include research on the realization of floating offshore wind turbines and offshore wind farms.
