The Joining Structural Design Field (Reliability Design Division) studies how to evaluate the performance and reliability of welded and joined members and various structures. The lab approaches evaluation along two axes: a time axis called "through-process," which spans the whole life cycle of a structure, and a spatial axis called "trans-scale," which ranges from micro to macro. In particular, the lab develops methods to evaluate the effects of thermal processing, typified by residual stress and distortion, from both microscopic and macroscopic perspectives. The lab aims to build a design science that can contribute to advancing structure-building processes that use welding and joining.

The Mathematical Analysis Field studies welding and joining technology for ships, which are huge structures built from metal. The lab mathematically models various phenomena in which welding heat sources, welding materials, and mechanical loads combine, and investigates them through numerical simulation. This technology can be applied to all kinds of structures, not only ships, and research on modeling and simulation is expected to lead to the evaluation of joining technologies for future transport equipment. To evaluate the safety of structures, the lab also addresses the thermodynamic phenomena of solid-state joining and additive manufacturing through research and development of numerical analysis software and measurement methods.
