The lab focuses on proteins such as septins, which are highly expressed in the brain and nervous system, and uses genetically modified mice to study the mechanisms of human psychiatric and neurological diseases. Septins are cytoskeletal proteins, alongside actin and tubulin, that regulate cell shape and rigidity. Using abnormalities in behavior such as cognitive function, motor function, and sociality as clues, the lab searches for molecular mechanisms that remain unknown.

The Molecular Modification and Regulation Lab studies life phenomena controlled by protein degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Proteins in the body are synthesized when needed and degraded once they have served their purpose. Recent research has shown that this degradation is not merely a mechanism for clearing away what is unneeded, but a regulatory system that actively controls a wide range of biological functions. The lab also works on lipid asymmetry in the plasma membrane and on improving techniques for removing targeted proteins.

The Molecular Expression and Regulation Lab studies previously unknown types of RNAs and proteins, discovering them and clarifying their functions. In the flow from DNA to mRNA to protein, the basic principle of which RNAs get translated is still unknown. The work centers on omics analyses using next-generation sequencers and mass spectrometers, and on analyses of genetically modified mice. The lab hopes the results will lead to elucidating the causes of diseases and to treatments in the future.

The Interdisciplinary Biology Lab (iBLab) advances biological research using mathematical models, computer simulation, and artificial intelligence. The lab takes an approach of entering clinical and experimental research settings and getting involved from the research design stage, before data are collected. The lab's website describes it as Japan's first research hub for interdisciplinary biology. It targets a variety of diseases and life phenomena, including infectious diseases, cancer, immunity, and the effects of drugs and vaccines.

The Genetics Group mainly uses Drosophila as a model organism to study how interactions between cells affect tissues and whole organisms. The lab investigates how tissues of a specific shape and size are formed, how homeostasis of tissues and whole organisms is maintained, and how cancer initiation and progression are triggered. It has become clear that cells do not only cooperate but also compete with one another for survival, and this "cell competition" is also a subject of study. In addition to genetic approaches and live imaging, the lab also uses mathematical and physical models in its research.

The Biological Mechanisms Lab studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate neuronal axon regeneration, neurodegenerative diseases, and neural function, as well as their signaling networks. Living organisms change their functions and morphology in response to external stimuli and other cues, and thereby regulate biological phenomena such as development, regeneration, and behavior. In its research, the lab performs molecular biological analyses using nematodes, fish, and mice.

The Endocrine Signaling Lab studies how the internal environment and growth are regulated by the action of hormones. The lab focuses on the endocrine system, which regulates homeostasis of the internal environment. It investigates the mechanisms that regulate homeostasis of ions such as calcium, as well as those that regulate growth, metamorphosis, innate behavior, and reproduction. The lab aims to elucidate the basic principles by which animals keep their internal environment stable, and the principles by which environmental information regulates development and physiological states.

The lab studies how cells adhere and how biological membranes move. One focus is the hemidesmosome, which attaches epithelial tissue to the basement membrane. Using mainly cultured cells derived from the epidermis, the lab investigates how hemidesmosomes are formed and disassembled. The other focus is the liposome, an artificial membrane vesicle. The lab observes liposomes under an optical microscope to examine how biological factors such as the cytoskeleton affect membrane deformation.

The lab studies the bacterial flagellum, the organ that drives bacterial motility, and behavioral aging in C. elegans. The bacteria group studies, at the molecular level, how the motor converts ion flow into flagellar rotation and how flagella come to be built in a fixed number and position. The C. elegans group studies the genetic mechanisms behind the changes in behavior that occur with age.

The lab studies marine organisms, based at the Sugashima Marine Biological Laboratory on Sugashima Island in Toba, Mie Prefecture. At the station, research teams collaborate and approach marine biology from many perspectives, from molecular biology and systematic taxonomy to oceanographic surveys. The lab studies the diversity and evolution of marine invertebrates, and the cellular mechanisms of seaweeds and marine fungi. The lab also has a Nagoya lab in the School of Science at Nagoya University (Chikusa Ward, Nagoya).
