Motoko Fujiwara, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Motoko Fujiwara specializes in particle physics and uses theory to study the connections between elementary particles and the universe, focusing on dark matter and neutrinos. She develops ways to search for dark matter using clues such as temperature observations of neutron stars, gamma rays produced by dark matter annihilation, and phenomena that occur near black holes. In her message to high school students, she says that physics builds the ability to identify the essence of a problem and approximate it. The Degree Project, the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation's equivalent of a graduation thesis, is supervised by a team of several faculty members from different fields.

Daniel Gaina, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Daniel Gaina specializes in mathematical logic, category theory, and formal methods in the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation. In the School, he teaches courses such as Data Collection and Analysis, and Mathematical Logic A and Mathematical Logic B, which are interdisciplinary mathematics A and B. In his message to high school students, he says that mathematics is a shared language that helps in understanding other subjects such as physics, information science, and biology. He adds that studying mathematics develops the ability to think logically and solve problems. His profile in the Kyushu University researcher database lists his field as Foundations of Informatics and his affiliation as the Institute of Mathematics for Industry, with a concurrent appointment in the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation.

Takahiro Matsumoto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The research group of Associate Professor Takahiro Matsumoto studies reactions that use catalysts made of molecules containing metals (complexes). The group develops new technologies to produce commodity chemicals such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol from biomass, aiming to help realize a sustainable and self-sufficient society. It also works on photocatalytic reactions that use the energy of light, and on making molecules that are hard to react undergo reactions. Associate Professor Matsumoto is a specially participating faculty member of the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, and also belongs to the Applied Chemistry Division of the Faculty of Engineering.

Diego Thomas, Associate Professor
0 student voices
This is the lab of Associate Professor Diego Thomas, whose specialty is computer vision. In the message to high school students, the professor says that digital humans, virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) are shaping industries such as gaming, entertainment, education, and healthcare. Kyushu University's researcher information lists human interfaces, interaction, and databases as research fields. The professor belongs to the Division of Information and Intelligent Engineering in the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, and also holds concurrent appointments in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering and the Department of Information Science and Technology in the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering.

Mami Wakabayashi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Mami Wakabayashi specializes in global health and studies health challenges rooted in disparities between and within countries. Through research, practice, and education, the professor aims to contribute to solving health challenges on a global scale. Research themes include global health diplomacy, official development assistance (ODA), and international organizations, as well as access to medical products such as COVID-19 vaccines, and health disparities with a focus on socioeconomic factors and gender. The professor became interested in global health through volunteer work in Bangladesh as an undergraduate. The professor is a Special Participating Faculty member of the Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation and belongs to the Overseas Implementation Division of the Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies.

Kenta Goto, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Kenta Goto, a Special Participating Faculty member of the Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation, specializes in condensed matter science, colloid science, and physical organic chemistry. The research targets the boundary region between the microscopic world, where molecules are in lively motion, and the macroscopic world, where "things" function. In recent years, the professor has been publishing results on dynamic emulsions with multiple and multiphase structures that behave like living things, and on molecules that convert light energy directly into mechanical power. The professor belongs to the Molecular Assembly Chemistry Division of the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering, and also holds a concurrent appointment in the Department of Chemistry in the Graduate School of Science.

Boxuan Ma, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Boxuan Ma studies educational data mining, learning analytics, and related topics. Human-computer interaction and recommender systems are also listed among the research fields. The papers cover course recommendation, language learning diagnosis, and the use of ChatGPT in programming education. In the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Assistant Professor Ma teaches the approach courses "Real Data Analysis Techniques 1" and "Real Data Analysis Techniques 2."

Hisato Yabuta, Professor
0 student voices
The Center for Optical and Quantum Process Research and Development is a center attached to the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering at Kyushu University. The center's website introduces the EUV Project, the Gigaphoton NextGLP Joint Research Division, and the KrF excimer laser facility and processing examples. The website says that since December 2024 the center has operated under a new structure, with Professor Hisato Yabuta as Director and Professor Daisuke Nakamura as Deputy Director. The website introduces the Yabuta Lab, Nakamura Lab, Shiratani Lab, Kato Lab, Oki Lab, Sado Lab, and Ikeda Lab as the faculty of the Element Research Division.

Hiroyuki Ochiai, Professor

The Quantum Computing Systems Research Center studies what quantum computers should be as tools for information processing. Its pillar is the basic policy of the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering: the fusion of I (Information Science) and E (Electrical Engineering). The divisions for quantum computing algorithms, software, architecture, devices, and application exploration and social collaboration advance research and development in close cooperation.

Naohiro Kasuya, Professor

The Center for Extreme Plasma Research Collaboration works to elucidate plasma turbulence phenomena through experiments, simulations, and analysis using the linear device PANTA. Plasma is the fourth state of matter, distinct from solids, liquids, and gases, and the study of turbulence is a foundational research area for understanding nuclear fusion and space and astrophysical science. The Center is a university-wide joint education and research facility of Kyushu University, located within the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, where researchers in plasma experiments, simulation, and theory work together. It was established to become a central hub for plasma physics through collaboration in Japan and abroad, and it also works to make Kyushu University a core institution for plasma physics research and international career paths.
