The Analytical Chemistry Lab develops new nonlinear spectroscopic methods to probe the microscopic structure and dynamics of interfaces. Using these methods, the lab aims to clarify at the molecular level how the functions and phenomena at the interfaces of various materials, such as electrodes, semiconductors, and functional polymers, arise. In the College of Chemistry's faculty list, the research is described as "interfacial molecular science explored with laser light." In the College of Chemistry, students can join this lab for their fourth-year graduation research.

The Biomolecular Chemistry Lab studies the physical and chemical processes that occur at the interfaces and inside of tiny particles and droplets, as well as the mechanism by which cooperativity arises in hemoglobin. In its microparticle research, the lab traps and manipulates a single microparticle under a microscope using laser light or a microcapillary, and examines it with electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements. For hemoglobin, the lab investigates how cooperativity arises as oxygen binds. The lab's website still shows the name "Nakatani Lab," but the lab started as the Nagatomo Lab in April 2026.

The Spectroscopic Physical Chemistry (Ishibashi) Lab uses a variety of molecular spectroscopy methods to study the structure, orientation, and motion of molecules at interfaces and in solution. Using vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and total internal reflection Raman spectroscopy, the lab investigates the structure of molecules at interfaces and the interactions between them. Using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and the transient grating method, the lab studies photochemical reactions in solution. The lab also works on constructing mesoscopic organized assemblies and studying their optical functions and photophysicochemical properties.

The Atmospheric Physical Chemistry Lab studies physicochemical processes that occur in atmospheric aerosols (tiny droplets), cloud droplets, and on biological surfaces. The lab investigates, at the molecular level, the mechanisms of chemical reactions at the boundary between gas and liquid (the air-liquid interface) and inside liquids. The effects of air pollutants such as PM2.5 and ozone on the surfaces of the lungs and skin are also studied. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Enami Lab."

The Yagi-Matsui Lab (Computational Information Chemistry) uses quantum chemical calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and information science to study the structure, reaction mechanisms, and functions of molecules. The lab devises new theories and computational methods and develops its own programs. Focusing mainly on biomolecules and functional polymers, the lab works to understand molecular interactions, optical functions, and chemical reactions, and also takes on the design of new molecules. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yagi-Matsui Lab."

The Condensed Matter Physical Chemistry Lab aims to understand the properties of condensed systems made up of many molecules, based on the individuality of the molecules. Its subjects are soft condensed systems collectively known as soft matter, such as liquids, surfactants dispersed in liquids, liquid crystals, and molecular crystals. The lab develops various spectroscopic methods, structural analysis by X-rays and other techniques, and thermodynamic measurements, and uses them to study structure and properties. Students in the College of Chemistry can join this lab in their fourth year and carry out their graduation research here.

The Organoelement Chemistry Lab studies how to lay the foundation of "all-element organic chemistry," which makes use of the "individuality" of every element in the periodic table. The lab synthesizes compounds in which second-period elements such as carbon are replaced by heavier main-group elements such as silicon and phosphorus, and investigates their properties. It also works on developing new catalysts that function with abundant elements, without using transition metals. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Sasamori Lab."

The Bioorganic Chemistry Lab uses the knowledge and techniques of organic chemistry and biochemistry to elucidate the functions of natural products that show distinctive biological activity. In particular, it targets bioactive natural products produced by marine organisms and microorganisms, and takes on the question of why they show biological activity. Using the total synthesis of natural products as a foothold, the lab investigates the relationship between structure and biological activity, as well as the mechanisms of action. The main research subjects are cyclic peptides and natural products involved in protein-protein interactions.

The Nakamura Lab (Supramolecular Chemistry) studies "supramolecules," designing and synthesizing original cyclic multimers to create new materials. Natural receptors such as proteins select and bind specific molecules in pockets surrounded by many amino acids, combining relatively weak interactions such as hydrogen bonds. The lab develops artificial receptors that achieve precise molecular recognition through two approaches: assembling metal complex units and making the building blocks asymmetric. Such molecules are expected to lead to applications in sensors, separation and purification, and selective reactions.

The Structural Biochemistry Lab studies the mysteries of life and the causes of disease by determining the structures of molecules. For structural analysis, the lab uses cryo-electron microscopy with single-particle analysis, as well as X-ray crystallography. Targeting viruses, bacteria, and soft tissue tumors, the lab performs structural analysis with the aim of contributing to drug discovery. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Iwasaki Lab."
