The Visual Media Lab works on 3D displays and machine learning under the theme of media engineering. The 3D display group studies high-definition glasses-free 3D display and natural 3D display, aimed at applications that require accurate perception of 3D position, such as surgical simulation and robot teleoperation. The machine learning group works on automatic segmentation of CT images using deep learning, and on classifying, organizing, and visualizing documents about political and social issues.

The Digital Control Lab studies general-purpose control methods that can be used across a wide range of fields, not limited to specific devices. It takes on the question "What information should an essentially appropriate control input contain?", devising new theories and methods and verifying them through experiments. Two faculty members each lead their own lab (group), and they cooperate closely in lab seminars and in supervising students' research.

The Image Information Lab conducts research centered on image information and computational media. Its work builds on foundational technologies such as computer vision, augmented reality, mixed reality, free-viewpoint video, and video recognition and understanding. Students are supervised by multiple faculty members, which helps them develop the ability to think about their research from a variety of perspectives. The lab operates across several organizations, including the College of Engineering Systems, graduate degree programs, and the Center for Computational Sciences.

The Neuroinformatics Lab studies how the brain works by analyzing recorded data on the activity of the brain and neurons. The lab aims to offer artificial intelligence and robotics a new perspective, drawn from the internal mechanisms of the brain that emerge from neuroscience data analysis. The lab is also building an experimental environment that analyzes the EEG of sleeping mice in real time and uses optogenetics to control the activity of specific neurons. This experimental system is being built in collaboration with the Sakaguchi Lab at the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine, University of Tsukuba.

The Virtual Reality Lab studies devices that create the sensations of touching objects and walking around in a virtual space. It develops devices that return force to the hand, devices that give the sensation of walking on one's own feet, spherical displays, and more, and is also advancing their application to rehabilitation.

The Interfacial Transport Engineering Lab studies, from fundamentals to applications, the phenomena in which heat and mass are transported at the boundary (interface) between liquid and gas. It aims to deepen understanding of the physics of boiling and condensation and to apply it to thermal management, which removes heat from systems ranging from computer CPUs to nuclear reactors. The lab works on controlling bubble motion by finely processing surfaces and patterning wettability.

The Yokota Lab (Space Propulsion Engineering Lab) researches engines for spacecraft such as satellites and planetary probes, known as space propulsion systems. Rather than conventional propulsion systems that use chemical reactions, the lab works on electric propulsion, which uses plasma as the propellant, and laser propulsion, which uses lasers. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Space Propulsion Engineering Lab."

The New Energy Systems Lab researches the evaluation and risk analysis of new energy systems such as solar cells and fuel cells. It aims for sustainable development from the "3E" perspective, which takes into account not only energy but also the economy and the environment. Research groups work on life cycle assessment, resilience against power outages, and diagnosis of batteries and fuel cells. The lab is led by Professor Keiichi Okajima and Assistant Professor Yutaro Akimoto. In the weekly joint lab seminar, members read through reports on the global energy outlook in turn and present their research.

The S-Computing Fundamentals Lab studies how to handle the inaccuracy and uncertainty of numerical computation and how to control the risks hidden in it. The key is "verified numerical computation," a computational method that accounts for every error arising in numerical computation and uses it to derive mathematically correct results. Using this method, the lab also works on "computer-assisted proofs," which carry out mathematical proofs on a computer. On the website of Associate Professor Takayasu's lab, "TakLAB," the lab is introduced as a joint lab of three labs, including the Endo Lab and the Sato Lab, with "S-Computing Fundamentals Group" as its official name.

The Manipulation Systems Lab conducts research aimed at making robots manipulate objects as dexterously as humans. When robots and humans perform the same task, robots often cannot match human dexterity. The lab therefore aims to develop robots capable of dexterous object manipulation by combining technologies such as sensors and AI. The lab also works on modeling the objects being manipulated, and on applying the results to industrial robots and manufacturing sites through joint research and other collaborations.
