As the thoracic surgery department of University of Tsukuba Hospital, the lab treats diseases of the lung, mediastinum, pleura, and chest wall, mainly by surgery. Its patients have a wide range of conditions, centered on lung cancer, and including metastatic lung tumors, mediastinal tumors such as thymoma, spontaneous pneumothorax, myasthenia gravis, empyema, hyperhidrosis, and chest trauma. The lab actively performs minimally invasive surgery using a thoracoscope and has also introduced robot-assisted surgery. Besides clinical care, the lab devotes effort to academic activities such as research, conference presentations, and paper publication, as well as to the education of medical students and residents.

As the cardiovascular surgery department of University of Tsukuba Hospital, the lab provides surgical treatment and clinical research for heart and blood vessel diseases and trains cardiovascular surgeons. As a core institution of a wide-area medical region centered on Ibaraki Prefecture, the lab handles every kind of cardiovascular surgical disease, from newborns to the very elderly, 24 hours a day. Research areas of the faculty are introduced as including biomechanical simulation of complex congenital heart disease and synchrotron radiation microangiography. The description of the clinical care system is based on a greeting message dated April 2023.

The Pediatric Surgery Lab (Pediatric Surgery, University of Tsukuba) treats surgical diseases in children and also works to clarify diseases whose causes are not yet understood. Among the diseases that pediatric surgery handles, many have unknown causes even when treatments are established, and the greeting message states that this is true of most congenital diseases. The research introduction page presents a collaborative study that investigates the cause of acute appendicitis in children through analysis of the microbiota. For medical students, the affiliated hospital accepts observation visits and clinical clerkships at any time, and it is stated that applicants' alma mater does not matter for joining the department.

The Gastrointestinal Surgery Lab conducts research with the dream of an era in which patients with gastrointestinal cancer no longer suffer, and an era in which diseases for which organ transplantation has meant giving up can be cured. Doing experiments while performing surgery can be a trial, but the lab regards its greatest advantage as an environment where members can collect fresh clinical specimens themselves and study them themselves. In collaboration with institutions such as the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), also in Tsukuba, the lab conducts basic cancer research using glycan analysis technology. Medical students are also welcome to observe and take part in surgery and clinical care as practical training.

The Renal and Urologic Surgery clinical group provides care and conducts research on urologic diseases at the University of Tsukuba. In its research, the lab studies urologic cancers such as urothelial carcinoma, kidney cancer, and testicular tumors using the methods of molecular biology. It also actively pursues research on voiding dysfunction, reproductive medicine, and artificial intelligence. Through clinical care and research, the lab aims to train "urologists with broad insight and a spirit of independence and self-reliance."

As the neurosurgery department of the University of Tsukuba Hospital, the Neurosurgery Lab provides specialized clinical care and conducts research on diseases of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. Specialists cover areas including malignant brain tumors, skull base tumors, diencephalic and pituitary tumors, pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, and spine surgery. For cerebrovascular disease, in addition to endovascular treatment and surgical treatment of stroke, neurology and neurosurgery provide care together as a single team. The lab's research is divided into clinical research on patients and basic research on brain tumors, cerebrovascular disease, and more.

The Orthopedic Surgery lab provides clinical care, conducts research, and trains students, all centered on the musculoskeletal system, which supports movement and walking. Its research covers a wide range of topics, mainly functional reconstruction and regenerative medicine. The lab aims to create next-generation orthopedic care and sports medicine through integrative, transdisciplinary research and an international network.

The Ophthalmology lab is the ophthalmology group at University of Tsukuba Hospital, conducting research from basic science to clinical practice on the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. It handles a wide range of conditions that are difficult to diagnose or treat, offering everything from drug therapy to surgery. Its research topics include artificial intelligence using clinical eye data, ophthalmic optical instruments, intraocular lenses, and myopia progression control. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Tsukuba University Ophthalmology."

The Optical Medical Imaging lab conducts research on creating images of the inside of living tissue using optical measurement such as optical coherence tomography (OCT). It began in 1999 as a research group within the Applied Optics lab at the University of Tsukuba, and became independent in 2007. Its current research covers optical coherence tomography, Jones matrix tomography, ophthalmic and dermatological imaging using these techniques, and 3D polarization microscopy. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Computational Optics Group."

The Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery lab at the University of Tsukuba (Institute of Medicine) studies inner ear function using animals. The inner ear is an organ made up of the cochlea, which is involved in hearing, and the vestibule, which is involved in balance, among other parts. Built on three pillars of clinical care, education, and research, the lab works with affiliated hospitals in the prefecture and focuses on training otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgeons. The professor's greeting (April 2019) states that, in addition to research in otology, the lab also conducts clinical research on head and neck cancer and rhinology.
