The Bioinformatics Lab studies bioinformatics, which solves problems in medicine and biology through computers and large-scale data. Bioinformatics is the field that processes and analyzes large-scale life science data so that people can understand and interpret the behavior of living systems hidden in the data. The lab's website describes bioinformatics as something like a microscope or telescope for looking into data. The lab works both on developing technologies and on applied and collaborative research.

The Medical Mathematical Informatics Lab is a small, elite research group launched in December 2019 that takes on medical research through the power of mathematics and informatics. What the lab values most is "actually implementing systems and experiencing firsthand how society changes." With generative AI (LLMs) as a development partner, students can turn ideas into working systems even without programming experience, and they also learn the foundational knowledge of security and information infrastructure. Besides students in medicine and healthcare fields, the lab also welcomes students from other faculties, such as informatics and engineering, as teammates.

The Medical Physics Group studies technologies for treatment using radiation, as well as methods for measuring radiation dose. Its research themes include new proton therapy technologies, calculation of the dose distributions used in treatment planning, and the design of irradiation fields for neutron capture therapy. Each faculty member works on a different theme, such as measuring proton beam dose distributions, patient positioning, and research on brain metabolism.

The Radiation Biology Lab conducts research to enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatment that uses radiation. It works on boron drugs used in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), and on treatments that combine radiation with nanofiber meshes that release drugs gradually. The lab is also involved in research on models of cell survival in particle therapy combined with hyperthermia.

The Pediatric Environmental Medicine Lab conducts research on the relationship between the environment and children's health, in the fields of hygiene and public health. Using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (the Ecochil Study), the lab has published papers examining the association of exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and other substances during pregnancy with the course of pregnancy and children's development. Other topics include changes in children who take part in long-term camps and the exposures that preterm infants receive in medical settings.

The Environmental Health (Industrial Psychiatry and Space Medicine) Lab studies the mental health of astronauts and people who work in special environments. The lab conducts closed-environment experiments that simulate spaceflight, as well as surveys of workers. It also works on using artificial intelligence to predict workers' psychological burden, and on testing stress management that makes use of the natural environment. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Industrial Psychiatry and Space Medicine Group."

The Integrative Health Information Lab (Ohniwa Lab) conducts research under the main theme of "integrative studies of health information." Among health-related issues, it takes on those that cut across disciplines or cannot be tied to any existing field, approaching them without being bound by discipline, method, or standpoint. The lab aims to create prototype products, practices, and concepts, and to put to society methodologies that lead to problem solving and value creation. Its activities take place in the College of Medical Sciences, the Global Issues Degree Program, and the International Joint Degree Program in Food and Health Sciences, among others.

The Forensic Medicine Lab integrates knowledge from pathology, toxicology, law, and other fields to conduct research that supports appropriate forensic examinations. As a contribution to society, the lab performs forensic autopsies and strives to present scientific evidence in criminal investigations, forensic identification work, and in court. Its main research areas are genetic traits relevant to forensic medicine, the metabolism of drugs and poisons and the mechanisms of poisoning, and medical law and the history of forensic medicine.

The Nephrology Lab is working to create new technologies that stop the progression of kidney disease at its root. Through translational research that runs consistently from basic science to clinical practice, the lab aims for a future in which patients do not need to start dialysis. As the nephrology department of the University of Tsukuba Hospital, the lab provides clinical care and also trains residents who aim to become board-certified nephrologists.

The lab aims to elucidate the causes and pathology of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, IgG4-related disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. By combining analyses of patients' valuable blood and diseased tissue with validation in model mice, the lab can work toward identifying new disease-related molecules and therapeutic targets. Ultimately, the lab is exploring the development of treatments aimed at curing autoimmune diseases. Lab visits are accepted at any time, and the lab actively welcomes visits from students at other universities.
