The Statistical Mathematics Lab studies statistical science methods that mathematically capture the variability and uncertainty of data and extract useful information and patterns from it. The lab mainly deals with the theory and application of statistical methods, practical research in biostatistics, and statistical graphics. The lab develops statistical models for high-dimensional data with complex structures and for longitudinally observed data, and also works on analyzing human data. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Araki Lab."

The Algorithm Theory Lab studies unified methods for designing efficient algorithms, as well as new methods for analyzing algorithms. An algorithm gives a procedure for solving a problem, and it is an important element not only of computer software but also of hardware. In particular, the lab works on algorithms for solving discrete problems that are modeled by graphs, networks, or circuits. The lab works in collaboration with the Large-Scale Data Mathematical Optimization Lab.

The Intelligent Systems Science Lab (Shinohara-Ryo Lab) conducts broad research on the theory of building intelligent systems, as well as their algorithms and applications. As information processing technology advances, the information society of the future will need systems that have more advanced intelligent functions, are highly reliable, and are friendly to people. Research is organized around three pillars: string processing, the theory and applications of machine learning, and game informatics. These three pillars are related to one another.

The Natural Language Processing Lab (Sakaguchi-Inui Lab) studies natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and communication science. The Tohoku NLP Group, to which the lab belongs, holds the motto "Explore Human & Machine Thinking." Recently, a paper exploring how figures are represented in large vision-language models was accepted to the international conference EMNLP 2026. The same group also includes the Suzuki Lab, the Matsubayashi Lab, and the Saito Lab, all of which are listed together on the members page.

The Information Biology Lab (Obayashi Lab) uses information science to connect genome and environmental observation data, studying the differences and connections among living things. Its main focus is currently marine ecosystems, from coastal waters to the open ocean. Through genome analysis and field observation, the lab discovers organisms and phenomena that were previously invisible. Through databases, visualization, and AI, the lab aims to turn the meaning and appeal of diversity into knowledge that people can understand and put to use.

The Information Systems Evaluation Lab studies mathematical models and algorithms that are useful for designing and evaluating information systems, as well as the analysis of those models and algorithms. In highly reliable information systems, theory-based mathematical methods play an active role. Drawing on its strength in theoretical research, the lab also engages in industry-academia collaborative research. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name 'Ito (Ken)-Chun Lab.'

The Image Analysis Lab studies computer vision, image recognition, deep learning, and related topics. The lab's website introduces research on understanding images of tables, object detection, video super-resolution, visual localization, anomaly detection, and more. The lab also conducts research on multimodal AI, which handles images and text together. The lab belongs to the Intelligent Robotics Division of the Department of System Information Sciences, Graduate School of Information Sciences.

The Intelligent Control Systems Lab studies the integration of vision, control, and measurement technologies, linking visual information processing with robot control. The lab works on visual servoing, which treats visual information processing and robot motion as a single system, and on technology for processing data measured by 3D sensors in real time. The lab is also applying its 3D data processing techniques to fields beyond robotics, such as crystal structures in materials science and shape generation in computational engineering. The lab also uses high-speed vision and robotics to study the behavior of living organisms at the level of neural activity.

The Intelligent Robotics and AI Lab lists Embodied AI and Physical AI as its research fields. It also lists 3D spatial understanding, the integration of vision, language, and action, spatial foundation models, and robot learning among its research topics. Prof. Kanezaki took up a professorship at Tohoku University in 2026 and also serves as a Team Director at the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project (AIP).

The Sound Information Science Lab aims to realize advanced audio communication systems, using the mechanisms of human hearing as a guide. Its starting point is the idea that, to build systems that let anyone communicate comfortably in any environment, it is essential to clarify how humans process information. The lab conducts basic research on the auditory system and on multimodal perceptual information processing that includes hearing, as well as research on acoustic communication systems and comfortable sound environments that apply those findings. Its research spans a broad range of fields: in addition to acoustics and information science, it connects with electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, medicine, physiology, and psychology.
