The Exercise Science Lab uses physical activity, exercise, sports, nutrition, diet, and lifestyle as its keywords, working to improve physical performance, including athletic performance, and to solve health-related problems. Research is carried out using knowledge and techniques from a wide range of fields, from the cellular level to the population level, depending on the research theme. On the lab's website, it is introduced under two names: the "Sports and Health Science" division in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and the "Exercise Science" division in the Graduate School of Medicine. Students are free to choose their own research themes and are not limited to the lab's current main themes.

The Gerontological and Home Care Nursing field studies nursing that supports people in living as themselves in the environment they choose, even in old age or with illness or disability. The lab values "nursing in the place of daily life" in familiar settings such as the home, care facilities, and the community, and works to create new practical knowledge oriented toward where people live. Research themes include end-of-life care in combined nursing and small-scale multifunctional home care (kantaki), family caregivers' sleep, and verification of death at home. Undergraduate research students carry out their graduation research under the guidance of faculty members and graduate students.

The Integrated Clinical Analysis Lab belongs to the Division of Medical Science in the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and is located in the Future Medicine Creation Center. Prof. Shimada is in charge of the lab, and the research field listed in the researcher directory is obstetrics and gynecology. The research keywords that Prof. Shimada has registered on researchmap include gynecologic cancers such as ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, cancer pharmacotherapy, clinical trials, palliative care, and angiogenic factors. In the Graduate School of Medicine's list of labs, the Division of Medical Science is shown with a master's program and a doctoral program.

The Internal Medicine field (Gastroenterology) of the Department of Regional Advanced Medicine is a collaborative department between the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and Iwaki City Medical Center, led by Prof. Takahashi. Its listed research themes include the pathology and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, the long-term course and carcinogenesis of NASH, the epidemiology and pathology of hepatitis E, and changes over time in gastrointestinal bleeding. In the collaborative department, visiting professors and medical students taking the course work at Iwaki City Medical Center and conduct research on community medicine. Enrolled students can earn a degree while working as physicians at Iwaki City Medical Center.

The Antibody Drug Discovery Lab studies how to produce antibodies against a variety of cancer-related molecules and apply them to antibody-based cancer therapy. The lab's website describes the production of antibodies targeting molecules such as HER2, CD44, and podoplanin, as well as research toward treatments for breast cancer, brain tumors, and lung cancer. Research on treatment using CAR-T cells is also described. The lab's website also presents the lab under the name "Kato Lab."

The Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Lab studies nursing approaches that protect and enhance people's mental health. Its role is to develop evidence-based care by viewing people holistically from biological, social, and psychological perspectives. The subjects of its work extend beyond individuals to groups such as families, communities, and schools, as well as healthcare professionals and supporters. Its research addresses support for people living with dementia and environments that enhance resilience in adolescence.

The Image Analysis Lab studies diagnostic imaging with nuclear medicine and PET, which use radiopharmaceuticals, as well as postmortem imaging. Although nuclear medicine and PET have lower resolution than CT or MRI images, they provide "molecular imaging" information such as function and metabolism. The lab aims to develop radiological technologists who can lead nuclear medicine and PET research in Japan and abroad as scientists and educators. For nuclear medicine and PET, the lab works with the Department of Radiology at Tohoku University Hospital and the Advanced Quantum Beam Science Research Center; for postmortem imaging, it works with the Autopsy Imaging Center of the Graduate School of Medicine.

The Palliative Medicine Lab is engaged in clinical practice, research, and education in palliative care. The professor explains that palliative care is for all patients suffering from serious illness and their families, and is not limited to end-of-life care. The national government is working to promote "palliative care from the time of cancer diagnosis," and the professor states that even for curable diseases, it is important to adequately relieve suffering from the early stages. In the greeting on taking office in 2015, the professor named educating medical students and young doctors in palliative medicine and conducting high-quality clinical research as the lab's roles, and said the lab will strive to send out high-quality evidence from Tohoku.

The Center for Regional Cancer Care Promotion is established within the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and examines the characteristics and problems of cancer care in Miyagi Prefecture. The center was established to promote exchange of specialized medical personnel, to provide the latest diagnostic technologies such as clinical trials and genetic diagnosis, and to develop and advance a network of patient groups, cancer counseling, and palliative care. Considering that Miyagi Prefecture, with its aging society and the concentration of cancer care resources in urban areas, may be regarded as a microcosm of Japan as a whole, the center aims to revitalize regional cancer care using this prefecture as a model. The center's website introduces the Tohoku Wide-Area Next-Generation Cancer Professional Training Plan, and the center houses its secretariat.

The Regional Oral Health Science Lab studies the relationship between oral diseases and systemic diseases. Periodontal disease is deeply involved in the onset and exacerbation of diabetes, preterm birth, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders. Using multi-omics information, including human genome, metabolome, and metagenome data collected in the large-scale cohort studies of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, together with lifestyle, health, and medical information, the lab analyzes the associations between the oral environment and various diseases. By analyzing diseases from multiple perspectives to clarify their pathology, the lab aims to improve the quality not only of dental care but of medical care as a whole.
