Etsuro Shibata, Professor
0 student voices
The Shibata-Adachi Lab studies how to build mechanisms that circulate metal resources. Its foundation is the concept of "Multi-metal Smelting," which links smelting and refining processes that have been separated by metal, such as copper, lead, and zinc. The lab aims to extract metals not only from ores but also from E-scrap with complex compositions, from waste, and from smelting by-products. While chemical thermodynamics is its academic base, the lab also tackles technical challenges that chemical thermodynamics alone cannot address.

Junya Kano, Professor

The Kano-Kushimoto Lab uses computer simulation to study processes that handle powders, which are collections of fine particles. It works on saving energy in powder processes such as grinding, mixing, and classification, and on reducing carbon dioxide emissions in ironmaking processes. The lab is also researching hydrogen production from biomass by the mechanochemical method and recovery of rare metals from discarded home appliances. In addition to knowledge of powder technology, students can acquire programming skills for numerical analysis such as DEM and CFD.

Hiroyuki Fukuyama, Professor

The Fukuyama-Ohtsuka-Uchikoshi-Adachi Lab develops advanced materials and their processes for the fields of energy, the environment, and aerospace. Its field is ultra-high temperatures: above 1,000°C is routine, and sometimes temperatures exceed 2,000°C. The lab works on single-crystal growth of semiconductors, next-generation ultra-heat-resistant alloys, and advanced nonferrous smelting processes. Members acquire a sense for the physical chemistry of materials and pioneer the frontier of materials processing and high-temperature melt science.

Takahisa Omata, Professor
0 student voices
The Omata-Suzuki-Yamasaki Lab studies new materials that will be at the heart of solar cells and fuel cells. The lab designs materials by understanding the features of atoms and crystal structures, and goes as far as developing new processes to actually make them. By creating new materials, the lab hopes to contribute to solving energy problems. Many members come from other universities and colleges of technology (KOSEN), and lab visits are accepted at any time.

Shuichi Oi, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Shuichi Oi and Lecturer Shinya Tanaka research the creation of new synthetic reactions with the help of metals. Professor Oi works on developing organic reactions that use transition metal catalysts, and has succeeded in developing new catalytic organic synthesis reactions and asymmetric synthesis reactions. Lecturer Tanaka works on developing reactions such as the carboxylation of unsaturated compounds with carbon dioxide. Professor Oi also applies the reactions he has developed to the development of electronic materials and luminescent materials.

Yusuke Tamura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Associate Professor Yusuke Tamura at the Graduate School of Engineering has studied operation assistance for personal mobility such as electric wheelchairs, and the search for radiation sources by mobile robots. In personal mobility, the lab aimed to achieve operation assistance that estimates the rider's intent without undermining the rider's sense of agency. In its radiation source research, the lab developed a method that uses a mobile robot equipped with a gamma-ray detector to estimate the locations of concealed radiation sources.

The Algebra Lab is a lab in the Department of Mathematics, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University, and its faculty members specialize in number theory and algebraic geometry. The Department of Mathematics' faculty introductions list each member's specialty as number theory; number theory and arithmetic geometry; algebraic geometry; and number theory, arithmetic geometry, and automorphic representations. The faculty members in the lab hold the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor.

Takashi Shioya, Professor

The Analysis Lab is one of the research groups in the Department of Mathematics, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University, and conducts research in the field of analysis. Faculty research areas include nonlinear evolution equations, boundary value problems, ordinary differential equations, elliptic partial differential equations, and the theory of partial differential equations. Some faculty members also study mathematical physics, probability theory, computational mathematics for discrete geometry, and shape optimization problems.
