The Takahashi-Karikawa Lab studies how to improve the safety of large, complex systems in which humans play the main role in ensuring safety. Targeting aviation systems and nuclear power plants, it works to improve safety from the perspectives of human cognitive models and behavioral economics. It also develops technology to estimate a person's state from biological information such as visual information, heart rate variability, and brain activity. It studies the social acceptance of advanced technologies such as AI and nuclear power from the standpoint of subjective risk perception.

The Intellectual Property Lab studies innovation and entrepreneurship (starting a company) from the perspective of economic policy. Using data, the lab quantitatively analyzes how the technology transfer activities of regional public testing and research institutes affect outcomes such as the productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises. The lab also examines how factors such as the quality of science affect the IPOs and fundraising of university spin-off startups. The lab's website is set up as the personal page of Associate Professor Nobuya Fukugawa.

The Okamoto-Oyanagi Lab reads the reactions and mass transport that take place inside the Earth from rocks, which serve as a recording medium. It combines field surveys, reaction experiments that recreate conditions in the Earth's interior, and the latest analytical techniques. The lab takes on questions about the interplay of the geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, as well as the unsolved problems of crustal fluids and how earthquakes occur. Building on this understanding, the lab is advancing evaluation and prediction aimed at the effective use of new mineral resources and the Earth's energy.

The Chien-Han Lab studies living organisms, including microorganisms, and the environments they inhabit, to deepen understanding of both. It aims to develop and put into practical use biological (bio) environmental technologies that contribute to a sustainable society. The lab clarifies how plants and microorganisms remove toxic metals and proposes environmental remediation processes. Toward a society in which resources circulate, it also works on recovering metals through the action of living organisms.

The Takahashi (H.)-Yokoyama Lab studies how to make nanomaterials in aqueous solutions at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The materials it works with are metals, metal sulfides, oxides, and halides, and composites of these. Using only simple, easy-to-operate equipment, the lab aims to produce high-performance materials under conditions that save resources and energy and have a low environmental impact. It aims to bring out the full functionality of the materials it makes and turn them into forms useful to society, such as devices that outperform existing ones.

Yoshinori Sato, Professor

Sato (Y.) Lab studies functional materials made from light non-metallic elements, including carbon. To give large-scale materials the properties of nanomaterials, the lab develops materials based on the design of surfaces and interfaces. The lab also works on fuel cell catalysts and energy harvesting materials, aiming to create the lightweight, high-performance materials needed for next-generation clean energy. The lab supports students so that they can develop curiosity about their research topics early on and build problem-solving skills.

Masanobu Kamitakahara, Professor

Kamitakahara-Umetsu Lab studies the design of materials that are in harmony with life and the environment. Combining environmental science, materials science, and life science, the lab investigates from the fundamentals how materials interact with biological and natural phenomena. Its main subjects are ceramic artificial bones that repair bone defects, carriers that immobilize microorganisms, and environmental remediation materials made from waste. Through materials design, the lab aims for materials that are not only in harmony with the environment but also actively act on life and nature.

Noriaki Watanabe, Professor

The Watanabe-Wang Lab studies technologies for developing resources and energy, as well as technologies for assessing and reducing the environmental risks that arise in the process. The core of its research is to clarify how materials move and circulate underground, in the geosphere. Its work ranges from developing geothermal resources and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to investigating soil and groundwater contamination. The lab also works on data-driven science, which extracts essential laws from high-dimensional data.
