The Biomaterials Science and Engineering Lab is in charge of research and education in tissue engineering, biomedical engineering, and biomaterials science in the oral and orthopedic fields. The lab focuses on the regeneration of hard tissues such as bone, cartilage, and teeth. One of its goals is to create artificial tissue engineering approaches using new biomaterials developed to follow the mechanism by which hard tissues form in the body (biomineralization). The lab was founded in 2004 as the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Functional Reconstruction and took its current name in 2025.

The Oral System Prosthodontics Lab carries out clinical work, research, and education in removable partial dentures, dental implants, maxillofacial prosthetics, and dysphagia rehabilitation. In its research, the lab looks for ways to restore lost teeth or jaw tissue that consider not only shape but also function, the way forces are distributed, and the response of living tissue. Working with other fields and with companies, the lab measures bite force, analyzes changes in jawbone, and develops new materials and dental devices. The lab belongs to the Department of Rehabilitation Dentistry at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry.

The Molecular and Regenerative Prosthodontics Lab studies prosthodontics, the replacement of lost teeth with artificial materials, from the perspectives of molecular biology, biomaterials science, and regenerative medicine. The lab is in charge of crown and bridge prosthodontics at the undergraduate level, and it also provides treatment such as crowns, bridges, and implants at the Department of Occlusal Restoration of Tohoku University Hospital. The "Molecular and Regenerative" in the lab's name reflects the intention to respect conventional prosthodontics while introducing molecular interpretations from biology, materials science, and physical chemistry, together with regenerative medicine. The professor describes the lab as a gathering of members who are interested in creating new things.

The Gerodontology Lab studies how dental and oral health care should be provided for older adults. Through health care practice that involves interprofessional collaboration, such as outpatient care and home-visit dental care, the lab explores the contribution that dental and oral health care can make to society in a super-aged society. The lab also puts effort into epidemiological research that examines the relationship between dental and oral health and overall health and quality of life. The lab is part of the Department of Rehabilitation Dentistry in the Graduate School of Dentistry.

The Regenerative Dental Engineering Lab focuses on unresolved problems in clinical dental practice and conducts research to solve them from the perspective of regenerative biomedical engineering. Applying techniques for modifying titanium nano-surfaces and for regulating intracellular redox, the lab has been developing biomaterials that enable regeneration of the bone and periodontal tissue around implants and control of inflammation. The lab also focuses on the mechanical stimuli that cells receive, and uses mechanobiology to uncover the mechanisms of diseases caused by occlusal and masticatory forces. The lab also develops dental devices and educational support systems that combine AI and computer engineering.

The International Collaborative Innovative Dentistry Lab conducts research based on international industry-academia and cross-disciplinary collaboration, with the aim of improving oral health-related quality of life. In addition to developing and applying functional biomaterials and working on digital transformation (DX) in healthcare and education, the lab also studies the recycling of dental materials. The lab belongs to the Innovation Liaison Dentistry Department at Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry.

The Co-Creation Dentistry Lab conducts research centered on cross-disciplinary research and on industry-government-academia-citizen collaborative research. Through education in integrated knowledge, the lab aims to train people who can take a broad, interdisciplinary view of oral science. Through cross-disciplinary research, the lab develops medical materials such as nickel-free shape memory alloys, bioabsorbable metallic glass, and visible-light-responsive titanium oxide. The lab's staff and students include not only graduates of dental schools but also people from diverse backgrounds such as engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and the humanities.

The Data Science Lab centers on dental medicine and combines statistics, epidemiology, and information science to analyze data in dental medicine and health science. It uses real-world data such as claims data, health checkup data, long-term care insurance data, and community cohorts. The lab quantifies the burden and costs caused by oral diseases, and conducts health services research that evaluates the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of dental public health measures and healthcare services. The lab conducts joint research with researchers inside and outside the university, medical institutions, local governments, government agencies, and companies, aiming to bring its results back to policy and clinical practice.

The Tumor Biomedical Engineering Lab (Kodama Lab) focuses on the lymph nodes, where metastasis is found in many cancer patients, and studies the mechanisms and treatment of lymph node metastasis. Lymph node metastasis offers clues about how a cancer will progress, but its mechanisms are still not understood. The lab is developing the lymphatic drug delivery system (LDDS), a method that injects anticancer drugs directly into a lymph node and delivers them to the downstream lymph nodes. The lab has created its own “enlarged lymph node mouse,” which has lymph nodes the same size as those of humans, and uses it in its research.

The Functional Imaging Dentistry Lab studies the primary prevention of dementia, that is, preventing its onset. In a super-aged society, preventing the onset of dementia is an extremely important research theme, and in recent years an association between the oral environment and dementia risk has been shown. Dementia involves the brain and many other areas, and the lab studies it from many perspectives, including genetic factors, lifestyle factors, and the oral environment. The lab belongs to the Department of Oral Tumor Pathology (a cooperating department) in the Graduate School of Dentistry.
