The Veterinary Public Health Lab studies the gut microbiota and infectious diseases transmitted between animals and humans (zoonoses). Veterinary public health is a broad field that covers not only preventing illnesses such as food poisoning, but also promoting the health of humans and animals. The lab keeps germ-free mice, which have no gut bacteria, and being able to run experiments with them is a major distinguishing feature. The lab supports its students so that they grow into people who can realize One Health, the idea that human and animal health are one.

The Veterinary Microbiology Lab studies animal viruses. The lab conducts basic research on avian and bovine influenza viruses, bat coronaviruses closely related to SARS-CoV-2, and bunyaviruses. It also pursues applied research, such as oncolytic viruses that treat cancer and vaccine development. In addition, the lab isolates novel viruses from bats and studies their properties.

The Veterinary Pharmacology Lab studies how the body functions and how drugs act in mammals, including humans. Its work centers on muscle: smooth muscle, which forms the walls of internal organs such as the stomach, intestines, and bladder, and skeletal muscle, which moves the body. The lab seeks to uncover how muscle is repaired after injury and how muscle ages. The lab also continues research on the actions of natural substances, such as toxins from marine organisms and components of foods.

The Veterinary Anatomy Lab focuses on the “form” of living things and studies them from the perspective of morphology. In particular, it investigates gonad development, cell differentiation, immunity, and evolution, focusing on the gonads that nurture the germ cells that give rise to sperm and eggs. It uses a wide range of methods, from gross anatomy observed with the naked eye to histology, molecular biology, and the generation of knockout mice. It is a lab where students can choose their own research topics based on their own interests.

The Veterinary Reproduction and Breeding Lab studies the mechanisms of sex and reproduction in mammals, with "hormones" as its keyword. The lab aims to put its findings to use in livestock production settings. Its goals are both to breed livestock efficiently and to reduce the numbers of wild animals that damage crops. The lab also hosts a research group in farm animal clinical medicine.

The Food Pathogenic Microbiology Lab studies pathophysiology and toxicology based on the evaluation of animal physiological function. The lab explores animal disease models and original techniques for evaluating physiological function that are useful for nonclinical safety studies of food and pharmaceuticals. By combining pathological analysis with constantly changing data such as animal vital signs, the lab works to clarify the mechanisms of disease and to develop technologies for prevention and treatment. The lab is now seeking to extend this approach to models of infections caused by food-borne microorganisms.

The Okada Lab (Laboratory of Pathology and Development) studies changes in chromatin in germ cells. In germ cells, which pass genetic information on to the next generation, the environment surrounding the DNA also changes dramatically so that the information is transmitted correctly. The lab focuses on chromatin, which regulates gene function by changing the higher-order structure of DNA, and investigates how these changes contribute to the maintenance or erasure (resetting) of genetic information. The lab's research uses mice and biochemical methods.
