The Precision Synthetic Chemistry Lab (called the "Minakata Lab" on its website) aims to develop new methods for synthesizing useful molecules from readily available starting materials. It emphasizes methodologies that are efficient, selective, and green. The target molecules include building blocks useful in organic synthesis, fullerene derivatives aimed at functional materials, and skeletons that can lead to natural products. To open up new reaction environments for organic synthesis, the lab aims to encapsulate organic substances in inorganic porous materials and discover new reactions through their chemical transformation.

The Precision Resource Chemistry Lab studies the development of new organic synthesis reactions that make use of the properties of main-group metals, which are also abundant as resources. The basis of precision organic synthesis is synthesizing highly functionalized compounds from simple molecules. The lab aims for reactions with stereoselectivity and functional-group selectivity that cannot be achieved with conventional methods. The results contribute to areas such as the synthesis of functional molecules, the development of processes that reduce environmental impact, and applications in biotechnology.

The Natural Materials Functionalization Lab (Nogi Lab) studies materials made from cellulose nanofibers, which are found in plants. Cellulose nanofibers are extremely fine fibers 4-15 nm wide, and they are a natural resource contained in every plant on Earth. In 2008, the lab succeeded in using these nanofibers to make "transparent paper." Today, the lab is developing new cellulose nanofiber materials and researching paper electronics, which are electronic devices built with transparent paper.

The Quantum Beam Materials Science Lab (Kozawa Lab) studies the chemical reactions that quantum beams, such as electron beams, extreme ultraviolet light, and X-rays, cause in materials, as well as the reaction fields in which they occur. The lab aims to clarify the whole chemical reaction system, from the energy deposited by a quantum beam, through the chemical reactions, to the emergence of a function. Based on this knowledge, the lab is building new chemical reaction systems that make it possible to manufacture next-generation high-performance semiconductors. The lab also studies photosensitive materials (resists) used in the microfabrication of semiconductors.

The Coordination Chemistry Lab focuses on metal complexes and works to lay the foundation for realizing artificial photosynthesis. Reactions that use solar energy to produce storable clean fuels such as hydrogen and alcohols are called artificial photosynthesis. Metal complexes play a central role in biological functions, and this lab looks to them for its research. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Masaoka Lab."

The Polymer Materials Chemistry Lab studies the precise design and synthesis of functional polymers and the evaluation of their properties and functions. The lab works on creating biomass plastics from renewable resources and controlling their properties. It is also developing new methods for synthesizing nanoporous polymers, aiming at applications in medicine, the environment, and energy. The lab is also developing technologies to control the adhesion of hydrogel materials.

The Global Food Agritech Lab conducts research aimed at improving the nutritional value, sensory properties, and functionality of agricultural food products. The lab places importance on upcycling underused food resources and waste, contributing to sustainable and efficient food production. Through international collaborative research, it combines a variety of food processing technologies and cross-disciplinary technologies to build a foundation that accelerates innovation in food technology. The lab takes up the SDGs of "Zero Hunger," "Good Health and Well-being," and "Responsible Consumption and Production" as its challenges, and also aims to train people who can work internationally.

The Bio-Information Measurement Lab conducts research aimed at clarifying why biological metabolism works so well and applying that knowledge to biotechnology and information technology. The lab develops measurement technologies to determine how metabolism operates, and finds simple operating principles in complex measurement data. It aims to apply the principles it discovers to biomanufacturing and new drug discovery.

The Metabolic Information Engineering Lab develops methods to improve cells to an optimal state for microbial production of useful substances. Using genome-scale metabolic models that cover the whole cell, the lab designs desirable metabolic states on a computer and then breeds strains that realize them. Through metabolic flux analysis using 13C stable isotope labeling, the lab captures the flow of cellular metabolism experimentally and combines it with computational analysis. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Shimizu Lab."

The Molecular Systems Creation Chemistry Lab (Yamaguchi Lab) uses synthetic organic chemistry to create new molecular systems for obtaining biological information that could not be obtained before. The lab produces synthetic molecules with desired functions and develops systems that control or visualize biomolecules and cells. The developed molecular systems serve as platform technologies for solving a wide range of problems, from regenerative medicine, drug discovery, and diagnostics to useful-substance production and biosensors, and the lab conducts applied research on them with collaborators in Japan and abroad. The lab is one of the labs where undergraduates in the School of Science, Department of Chemistry can be assigned for their graduation research, and from FY2026 it also accepts undergraduates in the Biotechnology course of the School of Engineering, Department of Applied Science.
