The Endowed Chair of Visual Function Reconstruction aims to reconstruct the visual function of blind patients using a retinal prosthesis. Centered on the development of Japan's own retinal prosthesis, the lab works on research and development of methods for evaluating visual function and for rehabilitation. The lab also studies neuroprotection, functional repair, and clarification of disease mechanisms in eye diseases, as well as the analysis and treatment of visual function.

The Endowed Department of Transformative Human Specimen Analysis aims to train people who can build new specimen analysis systems, as well as the next generation of researchers who aspire to a career in medicine. The lab is developing a collaborative research framework that links university hospitals across western Japan, and building a shared research foundation for infectious disease studies among hospitals in Osaka. It is also working to build a diagnostic framework using metagenomic next-generation sequencing for cases in which the causative microorganism is hard to identify. The lab also runs an educational program for high school students interested in infectious diseases and microorganisms.

The Endowed Department of Transformative Infection Control System Development is part of the Graduate School of Medicine and works on research using healthcare data and on training professionals in infectious diseases. To prepare for the next emerging infectious disease outbreak, the lab aims to train infectious disease professionals who are rooted in their communities and contribute to the world. In its research, the lab used claims data to analyze how a national policy promoting appropriate antimicrobial use affected outpatient antibiotic prescriptions for acute respiratory tract infections and subsequent hospitalizations for bacterial complications. For training, the lab creates educational content for residents and pharmacists, offers training for physicians in tropical infectious diseases, and holds seminars.

The Endowed Department of Transformative Medical Information System Development, part of the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University, develops an educational content delivery platform and innovative medical information systems to prepare for the next emerging infectious disease outbreak. The lab also serves as the training division of the Center for Infectious Disease Education and Research (CiDER), established at Osaka University in light of the lessons of COVID-19. The lab aims to provide a place where anyone can learn accurate knowledge about infectious diseases, anytime and anywhere. It is also working to build a medical information system that manages clinical data, imaging information, and clinical sample information in one place.

The Lifestyle Medicine Lab investigates, through clinical research, how lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise, and sleep are associated with health. Based on evidence from nutritional epidemiology, the lab develops lifestyle improvement programs that people can enjoyably incorporate into daily life, with the aim of using them in clinical settings. The lab also examines, in clinical studies in humans, the health effects of dashi and fermented foods, which have traditionally been used in Japanese food culture. The lab is established as an endowed department, funded by donations, within the Graduate School of Medicine.

The High-Precision Image-Guided Puncture Therapy Lab is an endowed department that uses translational research to develop innovative treatments and medical devices for interventional radiology (IVR). Its work in IVR includes research on drug delivery focused on tumor immunity and metabolism, development of liquid embolic materials, and development of CT-guided marking agents. In recent work, the lab has developed a Lipiodol Pickering emulsion that slowly releases anti-PD-L1 antibody, an immune checkpoint inhibitor, and is considering its application to the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

The Gene and Stem Cell Regenerative Therapeutics Lab aims to develop treatments using “designer cells”: adipose-derived stem cells into which genes have been inserted to enhance their function. Its main targets are cerebral infarction and autoimmune diseases. The lab also searches for new molecules that suppress inflammation and studies immunity against cancer. Established as an endowed department in January 2023, the lab is small but also conducts joint research with orthopedic surgery. In joint research with AS Medical Support Co., Ltd., the lab analyzed cells supplied by the company and found that the amount of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) varies between individuals, which may affect therapeutic efficacy.

The Disease Data Science Lab conducts research on biomarker technologies, drug discovery technologies, and post-launch drug optimization technologies (ikuyaku) for intractable diseases such as cancer. By analyzing large-scale data (big data) with computers, the lab aims to pursue everything in one continuous process, from molecular profiling to drug discovery and clinical application. The lab is a joint research chair funded by companies and medical corporations, and it conducts research in collaboration with core departments such as Gastroenterological Surgery. Graduate students who want to pursue a full-fledged research career in the future are welcome to join.

The Drug Discovery Neuroscience Joint Research Chair is a chair in which researchers from the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine and Tanabe Pharma work together on research to develop treatments for intractable neurological diseases. The lab analyzes the pathology of various neurological diseases, searches for drug targets based on the results, and evaluates the efficacy of new drug candidates using disease model animals. It also searches for biomarkers that make it possible to evaluate the effects of new drug candidates accurately and quickly in clinical trials. Making use of Osaka University's state-of-the-art imaging analysis facilities and more, the lab aims to create new value and achieve innovative drug discovery.

The Medical Data Science Joint Research Chair is a lab that sets out to build new evidence by integrating real-world data with clinical trials. Together with the Department of Medical Statistics and the Data Center of the Department of Medical Innovation, it operates as part of the Osaka University medical statistics group. The lab works on developing methods to build optimal evidence from real-world data and use it for decision-making. It is also building a foundation of medical statistics literacy and training the highly specialized professionals that medical research requires.
