The Joint Research Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Radiology researches the use of artificial intelligence in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), which supports physicians' diagnosis based on medical images. Together with companies, the lab tackles the challenges involved in developing AI-based CAD: preparing training data, developing high-accuracy systems, and incorporating them into the clinical workflow. The lab also develops AI technologies that handle the problem of limited case numbers, as well as explainable AI, aiming for practical use of next-generation AI-CAD.

The Joint Research Chair of Brain Function Diagnosis and Reconstruction (Hirata Lab) researches and develops technologies for measuring, reconstructing, and controlling brain function, with the aim of diagnosing and reconstructing it. Project Professor Hirata, who heads the chair, has studied how the brain works using magnetoencephalography and applied it to examinations, and has worked on the research and development of brain-machine interfaces, which reconstruct brain function by engineering methods. Through joint research with a group of companies, the lab aims for technologies that can be put into practical medical use, such as wireless devices implanted in the body. Project Professor Hirata completed graduate school in engineering and worked as an engineer at a company, then switched to medicine and became a neurosurgeon.

The Advanced Molecular Therapeutics Lab researches the development of treatments for intractable diseases that target pathological forms of a protein called periostin. Several splicing variants, in which exons are missing, are produced from the periostin gene. It has become clear that among them are forms that play physiological roles, and forms that appear in disease and either worsen or improve the pathology. The lab investigates the role of periostin in heart failure, aneurysm, cancer, cerebral infarction, and other conditions, and connects this to the development of treatments.
