The Soil Science Lab studies material cycles in ecosystems, focusing on soil, a limited resource. The lab is based at Matsudo Campus, set in the green Tojogaoka area of Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture. The lab turns pruned branches and similar material from urban green spaces into wood chips, charcoal, and compost, and uses them to study how to store carbon in soil. It also runs soil improvement trials on farmland in Fukushima Prefecture that has been decontaminated.
Shimpei Uraguchi, Associate Professor

The Plant Nutrition Lab studies how plants handle elements that serve as nutrients and elements that are harmful. Associate Professor Uraguchi has studied the mechanisms of plant tolerance to toxic elements such as cadmium and arsenic, as well as the mechanisms by which these elements are transported. Associate Professor Uraguchi has also worked on plants' physiological responses to nutrient elements such as boron and zinc, and the mechanisms by which these elements are transported. The plants Associate Professor Uraguchi has used as research materials range widely, from model plants such as Arabidopsis, rice, and tomato to green manure crops and wild heavy-metal hyperaccumulator plants.
Yasuyuki Choh, Associate Professor

Associate Professor Yasuyuki Choh of the Applied Entomology Lab studies relationships among organisms, using plants, herbivores, natural enemies, and other organisms as study materials. The specialty is behavioral ecology. Focusing mainly on mites, the research examines how prey coexist with their predators. Recent research has reported that blind mites practice brood parasitism using the smell of eggs as a cue, and that sisters guard eggs together when predators are present.
Akira Kanno, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Kanno studies, at the molecular level, the mechanism that determines whether an asparagus plant is male or female. The lab's work ranges from this basic research to applied research, such as developing markers that distinguish male from female plants and breeding varieties consisting only of male plants. The lab also crosses asparagus with wild relatives that are resistant to disease and tolerant of salt, in order to breed new varieties.
Akimasa Nakano, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Nakano pursues horticulture as a practical science and aims to implement the production technologies developed in research at production sites, with a global perspective. The lab is distinguished by its research on the roots of horticultural crops, and works to establish a new field called "horticultural root science." Starting from technology development for crop production in space, the lab aims to establish sustainable agriculture that can be put to use on Earth as well. To expand the potential of horticultural crops, the lab is also advancing joint research with private companies.
Yuya Fukano, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Fukano conducts research aimed at a new kind of environment-harmonized agriculture in which food production and the environment coexist. The professor specializes in ecology and crop science, and studies crops and the wild plants and animals around them, mainly through outdoor fieldwork. The lab also conducts research on agriculture using technologies such as drones and AI, as well as research on human psychology and behavior toward nature and agricultural products.

The Plant Environment Engineering Lab studies technologies that control the environment inside greenhouses and plant factories to grow plants efficiently. The lab investigates how plants respond and grow when light, carbon dioxide, temperature, and other factors are changed. Based on these findings, the lab aims to efficiently produce high-quality crops with enhanced functional properties.
Masahide Yamato, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Yamato studies the ecological aspects of mycorrhizae, well-known symbiotic associations between plants and fungi. Focusing mainly on natural ecosystems, the lab has revealed mycoheterotrophy and related traits in plants such as those in the orchid and gentian families. Its themes also include analyzing communities of mycorrhizal fungi found in forest plants, and identifying and classifying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Prof. Yamato belongs to the Faculty of Education (Nishi-Chiba Campus) and also teaches in the Graduate School of Horticulture.

The Microbial Engineering Lab studies microorganisms discovered in the environment, as well as lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. Its particular strength is research on anaerobic microorganisms, which do not need oxygen to grow. The lab covers both basic research, which examines the functions of proteins and genes, and applied research related to fermented foods and alcoholic beverages, purification of contaminated soil, and organic farming.
Yukari Egashira, Professor

The Food and Nutrition Lab studies how the various components in food act inside the body. Using mice, rats, and cultured cells, the lab searches for food components that suppress inflammation and liver injury, and investigates how they work at the molecular level. It also works on the metabolism of tryptophan, an essential amino acid, and on the search for food components effective in preventing obesity and lifestyle-related diseases.
