Seigo Amachi, Professor
0 student voices
The Microbial Engineering Lab studies microorganisms discovered in the environment, as well as lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. Its particular strength is research on anaerobic microorganisms, which do not need oxygen to grow. The lab covers both basic research, which examines the functions of proteins and genes, and applied research related to fermented foods and alcoholic beverages, purification of contaminated soil, and organic farming.

Yukari Egashira, Professor
0 student voices
The Food and Nutrition Lab studies how the various components in food act inside the body. Using mice, rats, and cultured cells, the lab searches for food components that suppress inflammation and liver injury, and investigates how they work at the molecular level. It also works on the metabolism of tryptophan, an essential amino acid, and on the search for food components effective in preventing obesity and lifestyle-related diseases.

Mitsumasa Hanaoka, Professor
0 student voices
The Molecular Biofunction Lab (Hanaoka Group) conducts research in plant physiology and plant molecular biology using plants and photosynthetic microorganisms. It aims to clarify, from the action of genes, how plastids, including chloroplasts, differentiate. It also studies how gene activity is regulated in response to environmental changes such as light and to the biological clock. The lab is located in the Interdisciplinary Research Building on the Nishi-Chiba Campus, not on the Matsudo Campus where the Faculty of Horticulture is based.

Hirofumi Dohi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Bioorganic Chemistry Lab is a lab in the Department of Applied Biological Chemistry, Faculty of Horticulture, that researches the chemical synthesis of glycans. Associate Professor Hirofumi Dohi specializes in glycoengineering and organic chemistry, and works on the synthesis and functionalization of natural glycans that act in the body, as well as glycans not found in nature. The lab is located in Natural Sciences Comprehensive Research Building 2 on the Nishi-Chiba Campus, not on the Matsudo Campus where the Faculty of Horticulture is based.

Hiroaki Kodama, Professor
0 student voices
The Biochemistry Lab uses animals, plants, and microorganisms as experimental subjects across a broad range of work. Professor Kodama studies the mechanisms that suppress gene function at the post-transcriptional stage, as well as the effects of fermentation products made by thermophilic bacteria. Lecturer Miyahara studies how plant pigments, the source of color in flowers and other plant parts, are produced, from the perspective of genes and enzymes. The lab is located in Natural Science Research Building 2 on Nishi-Chiba Campus, not on Matsudo Campus, where the Faculty of Horticulture is based.

Natsuko Kagawa, Lecturer
0 student voices
Lecturer Kagawa is the faculty member in charge of bioresource chemistry in the Department of Applied Biochemistry, Faculty of Horticulture. The research keywords listed in the faculty directory are organic synthesis, natural product chemistry, analytical chemistry, and food chemistry.

Takashi Shimada, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Molecular Biofunction Lab (Shimada Lab) observes structures inside plant cells and studies lipid droplets, organelles that store lipids. By examining proteins in the lipid droplet membrane and mutants involved in lipid droplet formation, the lab aims to uncover new physiological functions of lipid droplets. Through this research, the lab aims to clarify why plants store lipids, and hopes to connect the findings to increased production of plant lipids as a food resource. The lab also conducts research using the anthracnose fungus, a plant pathogen.

Kazuaki Takahashi, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Kazuaki Takahashi specializes in analytical chemistry, nutrition, and toxicology, and studies essential trace elements. Focusing mainly on selenium, the lab analyzes metal-containing metabolites in plants and animals to investigate their nutritional properties and physiological effects. The lab also studies the gut microbiota, working to clarify the symbiotic relationship between the microbiota and the host that is mediated by trace elements as nutrients.

Akiko Soma, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The lab studies functional small RNAs, such as tRNA, and their genes. Focusing on the functions and evolution of RNA molecules, the lab aims to clarify the mechanisms by which life, a precise molecular system, is built. Its specialty is molecular biology using microorganisms. Using Bacillus subtilis, a soil bacterium, as its material, the lab also develops new techniques for recombining genes.

Masatoshi Sonoda, Lecturer
0 student voices
Lecturer Masatoshi Sonoda is the faculty member in charge of the biomolecular chemistry field in the Department of Applied Biological Chemistry, Faculty of Horticulture. The lab's specialties are plant physiology and molecular biology. The research keywords listed in the faculty directory are plant aroma compounds, tendril formation, fruit browning, and transcription factors.
