The Information Systems Design Lab studies optimization algorithms that use evolutionary computation and deep learning, as well as cloud computing. It covers a wide range of themes, including security and large-scale distributed parallel processing. The Information Initiative Center builds and provides a large-scale distributed academic cloud for researchers across Japan, and the lab draws on that experience in its research.

The Advanced Networking Lab studies computer networks. It covers network design frameworks (architecture), QoS for maintaining communication quality, network security, and more. The lab is part of the Information Network Research Division at the Information Initiative Center, and accepts students from the Information Science and Engineering Course of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology and the Department of Information Electronics in the Faculty of Engineering.

The Advanced Data Science Lab conducts research based on information science, computer network technology, and statistical science. Its research keywords are computational statistics, intensive data analysis, network applications, and data analysis and anomaly detection related to cybersecurity. Current projects include clustering of aggregated purchase data, functional data analysis of time-series data, and early detection of security events. Students join the lab from their third year, and in a weekly English-language lab seminar they build their English skills by reading books on statistics and network analysis.

The Integrated Architecture Lab studies integrated circuit technology for continuing to process information with high efficiency even after the end of Moore's Law. Taking the approach of designing software and hardware together, the lab works on cutting-edge architecture technology and system-oriented integrated circuit technology. Together with the Integrated Nanosystems Lab, it forms the Advanced LSI Engineering research group (LALSIE), promoting industry-academia and inter-university collaboration. Students interested in LSI design or system design are welcome.

The Integrated Nanosystems Lab takes on the challenge of merging circuit engineering and device engineering to build integrated nanosystems that make the most of both. Its research spans semiconductor physics, circuit theory, information science, nonlinear theory, and neuroscience. After understanding the properties of new nanomaterials and devices, the lab designs circuits and information processing systems matched to their characteristics. Together with the Integrated Architecture Lab, it forms the Advanced LSI Engineering research group (LALSIE), promoting industry-academia and inter-university collaboration.

The Integrated Electronic Devices Lab studies selective-area growth and nanowire growth of III-V compound semiconductors by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The lab covers the whole chain of work in one continuous line, from growing new materials to three-dimensional processing technology, device applications, and integration technology. By controlling the behavior of electrons and light with heterostructures of semiconductor nanowires, the lab aims to integrate high-performance, low-power switching circuits and highly functional optical devices. The lab is one of the labs of the Research Center for Integrated Quantum Electronics.

The Electronic Materials Lab studies electronics technology, including nanoelectronic materials, to create new electronic and optical functions. The lab seeks to understand how electrons and light behave in semiconductor nanoelectronic materials from the perspectives of both electronic engineering and condensed matter physics. Based on this understanding, the lab makes energy-saving light-emitting diodes, lasers, and photodiodes, and explores new devices for optoelectronic information conversion. The lab also works on simulation of the plasma used to integrate these devices.

The Nanoelectronic Devices Lab studies "spintronics," which makes use of both the charge and the spin of electrons. The lab freely controls the spin state of electrons in various materials, such as ferromagnets and semiconductors, to create devices with new functions. Using half-metals, ferromagnets in which spin direction is 100% aligned, the lab works on technologies leading to next-generation ultra-high-capacity, ultra-low-power memory and logic circuits. Toward quantum information devices that use spin, the lab also investigates the properties of electron spins and nuclear spins in semiconductors.

The Optoelectronics Lab studies quantum optics and quantum information, as well as nonlinear optics and optical information processing. Making use of the "quantum nature of light," the lab works on unconditionally secure quantum cryptographic communication, quantum computers that process enormous amounts of data, and quantum measurement with extreme sensitivity. Focusing on the "wave nature of light," the lab also handles optical information processing technologies such as ultra-high-capacity optical communication, optical phase conjugation, and super-resolution image processing. Its goal is breakthroughs that greatly change society, beyond what steady incremental improvements can reach.

The Nano Material Properties Engineering Lab aims to realize highly functional, high-performance devices using inorganic nanomaterials. Beyond making individual devices, the lab studies everything in one integrated effort: materials, devices, process development, and machine learning for data analysis. Applications are wide-ranging, including wearable health monitoring systems, electronic skin, IoT, plant health monitoring, and VR/AR. Undergraduate students also get to take part in international conferences and write papers in English, with the aim of training researchers and engineers who feel no barrier with English.
