The Fukunaga Lab studies the effects of radiation on human health from medical and biological perspectives. Radiation is useful in medicine and other fields, but exposure also carries risks such as cancer, which is why it is called a "double-edged sword." In particular, the lab examines the effects of radiation on reproduction and on the next generation, focusing on how they relate to the spatial distribution and timing of exposure. The lab was established in April 2022 and is in charge of education for the Radiological Science and Technology Division and the Graduate School of Health Sciences.

The Brain Function Measurement Lab studies brain function using magnetoencephalography (MEG). A MEG system measures the magnetic fields generated by neural activity, making it possible to examine where and how the brain is working without harming the body. The main themes are memory, communication, and music perception, and the lab also conducts research using a new type of MEG system that does not use liquid helium. The lab has collaborated with research institutions in Japan and abroad, including Aalto University in Finland.

The Social Medical Informatics Lab analyzes challenges in medical technology and healthcare systems using methods from informatics and economics. For the problems revealed by this analysis, the lab explores solutions from the perspective of social medicine. The research centers on medical informatics and healthcare systems, and themes are set according to the interests of graduate students. The graduate program brings together people from diverse backgrounds, including radiological technologists, clinical laboratory technologists, nurses, registered dietitians, and graduates of faculties of economics.

The Musculoskeletal Disorders Lab studies the prevention and rehabilitation of orthopedic diseases and injuries (musculoskeletal disorders). Its subjects include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries of the knee, ankle ligament injuries, throwing injuries, knee osteoarthritis, and chronic low back pain. Using biomechanics methods that measure body movement with 3D motion analysis systems, force plates, and electromyographs, the lab aims to apply its findings in clinical practice. Many visiting researchers and working-professional graduate students affiliated with medical institutions such as Hokkaido University Hospital are enrolled, and they share clinical knowledge and experience through joint research.

The Adaptive Exercise Medical Science Lab studies exercise therapy, a core treatment in rehabilitation. Exercise therapy differs from other treatments in that patients use their own bodies and minds, repeating movements to improve the target function. The lab investigates the wide-ranging effects of exercise through basic neuroscience research using laboratory animals. Students who are new to research are also taught carefully from the basics.

The Sports Physical Therapy Lab studies the prevention of sports injuries, the effects of exercise therapy, and women's health management. Aiming to give back to clinical practice and the sports field, the lab carries out its research in four groups: stretching, injury prevention, women's health, and cold environments. It covers the prevention of ACL injuries, throwing injuries, and low back pain, as well as performance and conditioning in cold environments. Together with local governments and companies, the lab also conducts health-support surveys and develops devices.

The Motor Control Lab studies how people maintain body balance (postural control). Its main theme is clarifying how aging and motor impairment affect postural control. The lab investigates how balance is maintained by combining sensory and motor signals. Its long-term goal is to develop rehabilitation that improves balance and gait in people with motor impairment.

Takako Senkenji, Professor
0 student voices
The Senkenji Lab studies, at the molecular and cellular level, the mechanisms that keep the body healthy. Its focus is cellular senescence, a phenomenon known to be involved in chronic inflammation and degeneration in many organs while also playing an important role in tissue regeneration. The lab investigates the mechanisms of diseases such as autoimmune diseases, skeletal muscle diseases, and depression, and works to develop new treatments that combine rehabilitation and drugs. The lab is recruiting graduate students and welcomes lab visits at any time.
Taisuke Miyazaki, Associate Professor

The Miyazaki Lab studies how neural circuits of the cerebellum develop, from the standpoint of neuroanatomy. Neuroanatomy is a field that analyzes the shapes of cells and where molecules are located within cells. The cerebellum, the subject of the research, is a brain region known to be involved in motor learning and in coordinating body movements. Associate Professor Miyazaki teaches anatomy in the Department of Health Sciences.
