The lab searches for and develops the unique latent abilities of microorganisms, and conducts research to put them to use in industry and everyday life. The lab collects a wide variety of microorganisms from the natural world, and identifies and refines abilities useful for health, food production, environmental conservation, the shift of raw materials from petroleum to biomass, and the production of valuable substances. The lab carries out its research in cooperation with Industrial Microbiology, an industry-academia joint research chair. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Applied Life Sciences, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The lab studies microorganisms that use one-carbon compounds (C1 compounds) such as methanol and methane, known as C1 microorganisms. With molecules, chemistry, cells, and metabolism as keywords, the lab seeks to understand microbial metabolism and cellular mechanisms and to apply that understanding to protein production, higher crop yields, and reduction of greenhouse gases. Prof. Yurimoto joined the lab in April 2025. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Applied Life Sciences, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The lab studies bioelectrochemistry, the chemistry of biological mechanisms involving the flow of electrons and ions. In the body, the flow of electrons and ions generates the energy for life activities, and drug transport and information transmission across biological membranes take place. The lab clarifies phenomena involving biological membranes and oxidoreductases, and also builds devices that imitate the sophisticated functions found in nature. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Applied Life Sciences, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The lab designs and synthesizes artificial molecules, modified with original ideas from compounds such as plant hormones and those involved in energy metabolism. The lab studies in detail how these molecules behave inside plants and elsewhere, aiming to understand and control the intriguing biological phenomena in which these compounds are involved. Undergraduates are assigned to the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Applied Life Sciences, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The lab uses yeast as its main model organism to study how signals from cellular metabolites are transmitted and how cells respond to various stresses. Using genetic and biochemical methods, the lab investigates transcription factors that sense stress and activate the necessary genes, as well as the mechanisms that transmit signals within cells. Undergraduates are assigned to the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Applied Life Sciences, Graduate School of Agriculture).

Takeshi Nakano, Professor

The lab combines chemical biology, which uses the power of chemistry to explore unknown areas of living things, with molecular and cell biology to study how plants grow. Starting from the view that plant growth rests on two pillars, cell division, differentiation, and elongation on one side and photosynthesis on the other, the lab searches for natural and synthetic compounds and the new genes involved. For graduate school, the lab corresponds to the Plant Chemical Biology group (Nakano Lab) in the Graduate School of Biostudies. Undergraduates are assigned to the lab in their fourth year, and from graduate school onward belong to the Graduate School of Biostudies.

The Plant Molecular Biology lab studies, at the molecular level, the growth mechanisms unique to plants, in which cells proliferate and differentiate flexibly in response to the environment. Using the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, a bryophyte that holds a key to the evolution of land plants, as its main model plant, the lab centers on molecular genetics and aims to conduct research spanning levels from genes to whole organisms to ecosystems. In graduate school, the lab is the Gene Function and Expression field (Kohchi Lab) of the Graduate School of Biostudies. Undergraduates carry out their graduation research in their fourth year in the Division of Applied Life Sciences, and from graduate school they belong to the Department of Integrated Life Sciences in the Graduate School of Biostudies.

The Enzyme Chemistry lab seeks a deep understanding of enzyme structure and function, and works to discover and create new enzymes useful for industrial applications and drug discovery. Research combines AI-driven searches of gene databases and structure prediction with experimental validation. Undergraduates are assigned to the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Food Science and Biotechnology, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Bioorganic Chemistry lab synthesizes molecules involved in biological functions, such as natural products, using organic chemistry methods and studies their activity. Its work includes the total synthesis of polycyclic terpenoids with antiviral activity, the design of new functional molecules based on natural products, and the synthesis and evaluation of low-molecular-weight compounds related to food. Undergraduates are assigned to the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Food Science and Biotechnology, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The lab aims to elucidate the full picture of how feeding behavior is regulated. Its research draws broadly on methods from the life sciences, including neuroscience, endocrinology and metabolism, molecular biology, and genetics. Established in 1924, the lab states its mission as leading innovation in nutritional metabolism. Undergraduates are assigned to the lab in their fourth year (graduate students belong to the Division of Food Science and Biotechnology, Graduate School of Agriculture).
