In the field of optimization, the lab treats problems from social phenomena and from science and engineering as constrained extremum problems, and studies the mathematical theory and methods for finding their optimal solutions. The faculty members' research includes optimization problems involving continuous variables, decision-making problems using dynamic programming, and the use of computer algebra and artificial intelligence. Many of the faculty members belong to the Institute of Mathematics for Industry while also holding concurrent positions in the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and the Graduate School of Mathematics.

The probability theory field studies probability theory, the mathematical framework for logically analyzing random phenomena. Because the world is full of many kinds of randomness, probability theory has become a research field of wide scope. Each faculty member works on a different subject, such as stochastic analysis, point processes, quantum field theory, and interacting particle systems.

The Representation Theory and Harmonic Analysis field studies sets on which algebraic structures such as groups act, focusing on objects that are invariant under the action as well as objects that are analogous to invariants. When the set consists of functions, the field connects with analysis, and when it has a geometric structure, it connects with geometry as well. It is a field that can be approached not only through algebra but also from many other standpoints. Faculty members of the Faculty of Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematics for Industry, and the Faculty of Arts and Science are part of this field.

The Topology field studies geometric objects such as shapes through the properties that do not change under continuous deformation. It is a relatively new field within mathematics. Faculty research spans a range of perspectives that vary from professor to professor, including algebraic topology, singularity theory, low-dimensional topology, and applied topology. At Kyushu University, the Department of Mathematics in the School of Science and the Graduate School of Mathematics introduce the faculty together as one of their research and education fields.

Mathematical biology is a field that studies biological phenomena and ecosystems using theories from mathematics and physics, and at Kyushu University it is led by Associate Professor Hiroshi Yoshida. The aim is to build mathematical models that reproduce phenomena of interest, deepen understanding of those phenomena by analyzing the models, and present predictions that can be tested. Associate Professor Yoshida studies the length ratios of animal limb segments and the regeneration of amputated limbs, using a model that represents a population of multiple cells with multivariable polynomials.

The mathematical cryptography field uses mathematics to study the cryptographic techniques that secure information in communications and information processing. Both "information" and "security" are abstract concepts, so the field fits naturally with mathematics, which can quantify and handle abstract objects. A wide range of mathematics, including number theory, algebraic geometry, linear algebra, module theory, statistics, and combinatorics, forms the foundation of cryptographic research. Professor Nuida studies secure computation and the mathematical security evaluation of post-quantum cryptography, among other topics, while Associate Professor Ikematsu studies multivariate public-key cryptography.

The Insect DX Lab uses digital technologies to aim for a transformation of business models in response to insect-related social problems facing modern society. Its work covers automating insect species identification, adding higher value to insect resources by digitizing specimen data, assessing insect diversity using DX, and promoting DX through collaboration with insect science-related fields. As a short-term goal, the lab aims to automate outbreak forecasting for stable flies and Calliphora nigribarbis using deep learning-based object detection, leading to prompt and appropriate pest control. As a long-term goal, it aims to infer how biodiversity will change under climate change, using data such as distribution data from insect specimen collections.

The Animal Products Chemistry Lab studies how skeletal muscle grows and how it regenerates after damage, focusing on muscle stem cells (satellite cells). Associate Professor Suzuki conducts basic research in muscle cell biology on skeletal muscle stem cells, and aims to apply the findings to meat science and to health and sports science. Professor Tatsumi has investigated how hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) activates muscle stem cells. The lab's website lists muscle hypertrophy, regeneration, and atrophy mechanisms, regulation of muscle fiber type, and adding value to meat as research topics.

The Metabolism and Behavior Regulation Lab studies the mechanisms behind the behavioral and metabolic rhythms that animals show in step with daily and seasonal environmental cycles. The lab investigates the mechanisms of winter depression (seasonal affective disorder), chrononutrition, glaucoma, and seasonal rhythms of hormone secretion, with a view to contributing to livestock farming and medicine. The lab has an experimental group and a mathematical group, which work together to combine experiments and theory. It belongs to the Animal Science Field of the Animal Production Science Course.

The Livestock Production Ecology Lab conducts research on ruminant livestock at the farm on Ito Campus and at the Highland Agricultural Experiment and Training Station in Oita Prefecture. At Ito Campus, the lab works with dairy cattle and goats and analyzes the relationship between the microbiota and productivity. At the Highland Agricultural Experiment and Training Station, located in Aso-Kuju National Park, the lab investigates the mechanisms that regulate the constitution of cattle and how to manage it, in order to solve problems in beef production. It uses methods from molecular biology, morphology, physiology, and livestock management.
