The Timber Structures Lab studies timber structures that use wood and wood-based materials as structural members. Wood has complex mechanical properties such as heterogeneity, anisotropy, and nonlinearity, making it a material whose behavior is difficult to predict accurately. To ensure seismic safety over the long service life of buildings, the lab works on a wide range of research, from basic studies to technology development.

The Building Environment Simulation Lab studies how the quality of the indoor environment, such as the thermal environment and air quality, relates to human health and comfort. To enable comprehensive prediction and evaluation of the interactions between indoor environmental factors and the human body, the lab develops numerical analysis models and applies them in practice. Experiments are limited in terms of time, space, cost, and ethics, so numerical experiments (simulations) based on digital twins of the built environment have recently drawn attention as a new approach. Focusing on numerical human body models for indoor environment analysis, the lab aims to predict and evaluate indoor environmental quality comprehensively and with high accuracy.

The Habitat Engineering Lab studies how forming communities around public transit can improve the efficiency of urban land use. This approach is called Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). It encourages cities to grow upward rather than spread horizontally, creating dense and vibrant areas. The aim is for housing, shops, and entertainment facilities to be located near public transit and easily accessible.

The Strong Ground Motion Engineering Lab studies the prediction and evaluation of strong earthquake ground motion (strong ground motion) that causes damage to society. Earthquake records observed at the ground surface contain the effects of the earthquake source, the propagation path, and the site characteristics of the sedimentary layers. The lab conducts field observations such as seismic observation and subsurface exploration, and investigates the factors that generate strong ground motion by analyzing the observed records. Its main research themes are the source characteristics of intraplate earthquakes, the effects of high-attenuation zones around volcanoes, the ground motion characteristics of sedimentary basins, and the attenuation characteristics of shallow subsurface ground.

The Urban Space Studies Lab studies how cities have been built and rebuilt, from the standpoint of urban history. As cities and regions around the world modernize, they tend to lose their distinctive character, and urban space is becoming increasingly uniform. The lab therefore uses urban history research to clarify the actual state of urban culture, and focuses on passing that culture on through historic community development activities. The lab's research looks to the past, present, and future of urban space.

The Building Services Control Lab studies the control of air-conditioning and heat source systems. The lab works on evaluating the comfort of indoor environments using brain waves, controlling heat source systems for greenhouse horticulture, and optimizing the operation of building heat source systems. Some of the research uses model predictive control as the control method. Associate Professor Doyun Lee belongs to the Energy Research and Education Organization and holds concurrent appointments in the Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, and the Department of Spatial Systems, Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies.

BeCAT (Built Environment Center with Art & Technology) is an education and research center for design and engineering that takes the environment as its theme. Through investigation, research, and design, it aims to envision prototypes of environmental architecture for the Asia-Oceania region, implement them in society, and share them with the world. Taking Kyushu as a model for Asia, the center spends one year in a studio on research and design, under themes such as "energy," "disasters," "materials," "tourism," and "ecosystems."

The Functional Materials Interdisciplinary Chemistry Lab studies photofunctional soft materials with an eye toward cancer diagnosis and treatment. The lab develops pressure-sensitive soft materials that read out the pressure applied to cells (acoustic waves) as molecular luminescence, as well as sensors that detect cancer-related substances with high sensitivity. New photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy are also a subject of its research. On the lab’s website, it is introduced under the name “Fukuhara Lab.”

The Biomaterials Engineering Lab studies the design of soft polymer biomaterials with excellent biocompatibility for diagnosis and treatment. To understand at the molecular level how biocompatibility arises, the lab focuses on water molecules in the environment where a material meets biological components, and has proposed the “intermediate water concept.” The research falls into three broad areas: design, synthesis, and functional control of polymers; analysis of the structure and properties of bio-interfaces; and analysis of interactions between cells and materials. On the lab’s website, it is introduced under the name “Masaru Tanaka Lab.”

The Fujikawa Lab studies nanomaterials for making full use of atmospheric carbon dioxide and sunlight. The lab regards these, which are available anywhere on Earth, as “ubiquitous” sources of carbon and energy. By developing materials whose size and structure are designed from the molecular level to the nanoscale, it aims to open up a new field called carbon-neutral chemistry.
