The Insect Systematics Lab conducts research in taxonomy and phylogenetics, a branch of the study of insect biodiversity. In particular, the lab carries out systematic research on tachinid flies (family Tachinidae, order Diptera), which parasitize other insects. In recent years, the lab has also worked on DNA barcoding to distinguish blow flies (family Calliphoridae) and flesh flies (family Sarcophagidae), which are pests of public health concern, and is conducting collaborative research on the relationship between viruses and flies.

From the standpoint of physical anthropology and bioarchaeology, the Biomolecular Archaeology Lab uses ancient DNA and proteins to study the evolution and lives of people in the past. The lab extracts DNA and proteins from past remains to clarify aspects such as people's diet, health (physiological condition), and living environments. Its main targets are materials from Japan, from the Paleolithic period to the Edo period, and it also works with materials from overseas, such as Peru. The lab's website says it welcomes people who want to learn ancient molecule methods starting in graduate school, even if their undergraduate background is in a different field, such as the humanities.

The Physical Anthropology Lab (Biological Anthropology Lab) reconstructs and describes the lifeways and life histories of many different kinds of "us," including past humans and extant great apes. The lab aims to clarify how differences in culture and the natural environment affect lifeways, and how differences between individual lifeways connect to evolution and society. It applies stable isotope analysis, which can reconstruct the history of diet and of breastfeeding and weaning, and proteomic analysis, which can estimate physiological condition and more, to samples such as bones, teeth, feces, and hair. In April 2026, the lab moved to the Institute for Advanced Study at Kyushu University, and Associate Professor Takumi Tsutaya also serves as a faculty member of the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society.

The Plant Systematics Lab mainly researches plant polyploidy and speciation, and gall formation in plants. In parallel, it also carries out practical research on methods of disclosure at university museums and on science communication, incorporating a user kansei studies perspective. Professor Misako Mishima's primary appointment is at the University Museum, and she supervises graduate students as a faculty member of the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society.

The Tropical Plant Pathology Lab focuses on the invisible world of microorganisms on Earth and studies "the roles and applications of microbes in protecting the global environment." Its work centers on finding and diagnosing soil pathogens in the environments where tropical crops are grown, developing diagnostic technologies, and analyzing the genetic diversity of soil microbes. The lab also develops microbe-based biopesticides and technologies that turn waste materials such as discarded used paper into agricultural resources, and works on conserving the endangered plant Asparagus kiusianus (hamatamaboki). Prof. Matsumoto's primary appointment is at the Center for Tropical Agriculture Research, and he supervises graduate students of the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society.

The Automotive Sensor Lab researches devices and application systems that improve safety and convenience, as automobiles become electrified and intelligent. Its research themes include preventing intersection collisions between vehicles approaching from crossing directions, far-infrared image sensors and their application systems, and optical wireless power transfer. The lab also works on research that visualizes on maps how long people can stay at a destination, and on research into the value of mobility. Prof. Hirota's primary appointment is at the Faculty of Engineering, and he supervises graduate students of the Department of Automotive Science in the Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences.

The Ultrafunctional Energy and Nanomaterials Lab is a lab at the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER), which conducts fundamental research aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. The lab aims to develop new ultrafunctional materials by designing chemical composition and controlling lattice defects. Its research centers on experiments and detailed evaluation of nanostructures, combined with theoretical studies and machine learning. Master's and doctoral students are admitted through the Department of Automotive Science in the Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences.

The Insect Systematics and Taxonomy Lab studies the taxonomy and phylogenetic evolution of insects, focusing on insects that live with ants and termites, treehoppers, and other groups. The core of its research is to convey the wonder, splendor, and depth of species diversity to society and the public through insects. Centered on taxonomy, the lab combines methods and perspectives such as molecular phylogenetics and ethology, and conducts fieldwork mainly across Japan and Southeast Asia. Associate Professor Munetoshi Maruyama's primary appointment is at the University Museum, and students conduct their research as members of the Laboratory of Entomology in the Faculty of Agriculture.

The Comparative Developmental Psychology Lab aims to clarify the development of communication and its foundations through behavioral experiments grounded in natural science. To approach both development unique to humans and development shared across species, the lab conducts comparative developmental and comparative behavioral research informed by evolutionary perspectives and theories. As a foundation for research on infants and young children, the lab runs a volunteer panel named the "Kyushu University Baby Researchers" and conducts studies at the "Baby Lab" on campus. In cooperation with other research institutions, the lab also conducts experimental research on non-human primates such as chimpanzees.

The Perceptual Psychology Lab conducts experimental research using psychophysical methods to investigate the visual information processing involved in depth perception. Working on themes such as binocular stereopsis, motion perception, and perceptual transparency, the lab aims to discover new perceptual phenomena and to model visual information processing, including the oculomotor system. The lab is involved in education and research in the Psychology Specialization of the Human Science Course, Department of Humanities, Faculty of Humanities at the undergraduate level, and in the Psychology Course, Department of Behavioral Systems, Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies at the graduate level.
