The Material Design Lab studies the possibilities of materials and techniques that arise from expressive activity. The research keywords are material design, material-driven design, and material expression. In education, the lab covers selecting materials for art and design activities and actually using them. Centered on prototyping and design practice, the lab teaches design thinking with material-driven design and visual thinking as keywords.

Naho Yokoya, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Working in contemporary art and taking the histories and stories hidden in specific places as a theme, Assistant Professor Naho Yokoya conducts research in places in Japan and abroad, and creates and presents artworks based on that research. The research is carried out in diverse formats regardless of medium, such as interviews and video recording. The lab also actively engages in collaborative work with researchers in other fields such as history, biology, and cultural anthropology, as well as in community projects.

LOH Wei Leong, Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor LOH Wei Leong specializes in design education. At Kyushu University, the professor is listed as a faculty member of the Future Concept Design Course in the School of Design and of the Future Symbiotic Design Course in the Graduate School of Design. In the Faculty of Design, the professor belongs to the Future Symbiotic Design Division.

Hiroyuki Ito, Professor

The Psychology (Hiroyuki Ito) Lab studies human visual function. It takes up depth perception, motion perception, and visual illusions, investigating the interaction of depth cues and motion illusions. Prof. Ito also teaches visual psychology for design.

Taketoshi Ushiama, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Professor Taketoshi Ushiama studies environment design for making effective use of vast amounts of digital content. It makes integrated and advanced use of AI and machine learning, information retrieval, and recommender system technologies. Social computing and interaction design are also listed among its research themes. In education, the professor teaches lectures and exercises on cyberspace design and information technology.

The Content Design Lab studies digital content, where many forms of expression, such as CG, video, the web, and digital archives, overlap. It examines methods for generating and expressing diverse digital content, along with the problems of those methods, and pursues the possibilities of digital media expression. At the center of its research is designing comprehensive digital content that accurately captures social needs and meets them. The lab is currently also developing a way to support mental health across generations through VR reminiscence therapy using avatars.

Shoji Sunaga, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Shoji Sunaga's lab studies information processing in human vision, especially color vision, and applies that knowledge to design. It is known that the mechanisms by which people perceive color differ from person to person, and that not everyone necessarily sees the same colors. Based on this color vision diversity, the lab studies color scheme methods that keep information conveyed by color intact regardless of differences in color vision, as well as educational programs for learning about differences in how colors appear.

Mikako Tomotari, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Mikako Tomotari creates sculpture and studies Shugendo art and the nature of artistic consciousness. She makes sculptural works from actual materials such as wood and iron, and presents them at venues such as Kokugakai exhibitions. She examines the art of Shugendo handed down at Mt. Hiko in Kyushu using methods such as 3D measurement, and carries out restoration and analysis. She also considers how artistic consciousness comes into being, through Central America, Ainu culture, and disability.

Kenji Hara, Professor
0 student voices
Kenji Hara's lab specializes in computer vision and pattern information processing, and conducts education and research in visual information processing. One of its current research themes is segmentation that divides omnidirectional images into superpixels. The lab also studies image fusion, with non-photorealistic rendering as a keyword.

Tatsuro Ishii, Associate Professor

The Visual Expression and Extended Visual Expression Lab studies methods of expression in video media and extended expression using stereoscopic video. The lab also researches how to record exhibited video and reproduce it together with the environment in which it was presented. It also covers methods of expressing cultural heritage being prepared for World Heritage listing through video. Extended video expression using installations and projection mapping is also a subject of research.
