The Physically Based Computer Graphics Lab studies how to recreate natural phenomena inside the computer through simulations based on the laws of physics. The lab aims to apply the recreated phenomena to computer graphics animation, interactive applications, augmented reality, and more. The subjects include fluids, hair, terrain, deformation and fracture of solids, and phase changes. Student research topics include simulations of combustion, clouds, cloth, and food cooking.

The Interaction Lab (Inoe Lab) conducts research on interaction in a broad sense. Building on information systems technology, the lab designs communication, collaboration, and social systems for knowledge production, such as telework and online learning. On the lab's website, its research is described with terms such as human-AI collaboration, CSCW, collective intelligence, social computing, media communication, and educational technology.

The Interactive Programming Lab (IPLAB) studies human interfaces and software. Going beyond logical consideration, the lab puts into practice actually writing programs to create software. It has produced a variety of research results on GUIs (graphical user interfaces) and visual programming. The lab encourages presenting papers at academic conferences, including international conferences, and is also advancing research exchange with researchers outside the university and private-sector manufacturers.

The Visualization and Interactive Systems Lab studies information visualization as its central theme. The lab considers that understanding data is necessary to make effective use of vast amounts of data, and that visualization is one effective means of doing so. It works on designing visual representations of information, developing rendering methods, applying visualization techniques, and investigating characteristics of human vision. The information on the lab's website dates from around 2015.

The Social Robot Lab studies communication, interaction, and interface technologies between people and robots. As intelligent systems such as robots enter society and come into contact with people more often, the need to develop social robots is growing. The lab also conducts joint research and lab seminars with the Fujisawa Lab. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Mikawa Lab."

The Programming Language Lab works on developing tools for building parsers, as well as compilers. Its website introduces Depager, a tool for building parsers, and a compiler for the Pascal-S language. Depager is based on an object-oriented approach to building parsers proposed by the website's authors. The content on the website dates from around 2020.

The Phygital Media Lab studies virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), the metaverse, haptic interfaces, and more. The lab sees the metaverse as made up of three components—platforms, interfaces, and content—and aims to realize a future in which people are freed from physical and spatiotemporal constraints. A faculty member of the lab holds a cross appointment at Cluster, Inc., and the lab also conducts research using "cluster," the metaverse platform operated by that company. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Metaverse Media Lab," which the lab adopted when it was renamed in fiscal 2024.

The Hybrid Social Interaction Lab studies how new digital technologies affect interpersonal relationships and social ties. Building on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), the lab combines insights from psychology, communication studies, and information science. "Hybrid" in the lab's name refers to communicating in both English and Japanese, working across both online and offline settings, and designing human-AI collaboration in addition to human-human interaction. Through system development and mixed-methods research, the lab aims to build mechanisms that support meaningful interactions for individuals and between people in a digital society.

Shigetomo Kimura, Associate Professor

The Computer Network Lab studies the design of network protocols and the performance evaluation of communication systems. In the faculty introductions of the College of Media Arts, Science and Technology, the lab is listed as a lab in the field of Internet Science. Recently, the lab has been working on reducing power consumption of enterprise networks, flow distribution in SDN, detection of DoH traffic, and other topics. Associate Professor Shigetomo Kimura is also listed as a cooperating faculty member in the College of Information Science.

Sho Tsugawa, Associate Professor

The Social Network Lab studies the mechanisms of a complex society by focusing on the connections between people. The lab analyzes large-scale data from the Web and social media to investigate how information flows and spreads. Its research topics also include identifying influencers and methods for curbing the spread of misinformation such as fake news. For fourth-year undergraduate graduation research, the lab accepts students from the College of Media Arts, Science and Technology and the College of Information Science.
