The Physical Information Systems Lab asks how far the limits of observing natural phenomena extend, and studies a wide range of natural phenomena. In considering the limits of information processing, the lab holds that it is necessary to clarify what can be done, and how, under constraints, and it regards quantum information science and precision measurement science as its means of doing so. Undergraduate students at the University of Tsukuba are accepted for graduation research from the College of Information Science in the School of Informatics. Graduate students apply to the Degree Program in Information Science and Engineering in the Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering.

The High-Efficiency Custom Circuit Design Engineering Lab studies new computing architectures that use reconfigurable integrated circuits (FPGAs). By explicitly building reconfigurability into systems and applications, the lab aims to improve reliability and to optimize power consumption relative to computational performance. Research themes include autonomous flight of micro drones and immersive displays with eye tracking. In April 2026, the lab started as an independent lab, spun out from the FPGA team of the HPCS Lab.

The Edge Computing Lab studies computer science with a focus on hardware. The lab is interested in developing embedded systems into technologies that can be used in society, as well as in mechanisms for next-generation high-speed computing and high-speed communication. It is also interested in IoT and mobile applications, and pays particular attention to converging technologies in information science that target people.

Yasuhiro Takahashi, Professor

The Quantum Computation Theory Lab studies quantum information science, quantum computational complexity theory, and quantum algorithms. Prof. Takahashi's page lists quantum computation, computational complexity theory, and cryptography as areas of interest. Prof. Takahashi is a full-time faculty member of the College of Information Science, and is listed as a faculty member who can serve as a supervisor in the Computer Science Degree Program at the graduate level.

Yasuhiko Igarashi, Associate Professor

The Igarashi Lab studies data-driven science, which extracts the rules hidden behind natural science data from fields such as materials science, disaster prevention science, and neuroscience. Using machine learning methods such as sparse modeling and Gaussian processes, the lab conducts joint research with universities, companies, and national research institutes. The lab places at the center of its research sparse modeling, which extracts information on the premise that the important explanatory variables are few (sparse). The lab was founded in March 2020. The information on its website dates from around 2020.

Eureka! Design Lab studies design that responds to people's senses and emotions and creates positive moments of discovery. Targeting digital products, interfaces, mobility, systems, and spaces, the lab explores experiences that anyone can understand intuitively, use without getting lost, and enjoy using. By interpreting human emotion, cognition, and behavior, the lab aims for a future in which people and machines, people and systems, and people and spaces work together smoothly. The lab calls the moment when someone feels "this looks doable" or "this looks usable," and then thinks "I get it," "I did it," or "I could use it," a "Eureka!"

Masayuki Miyamoto, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Assistant Professor Masayuki Miyamoto studies theoretical computer science. Its particular interests are quantum computing, distributed computing, and computational complexity theory. Research results are published as papers, and a list is available on the website.

The Information Curation Lab studies the technologies and challenges involved in discovering and making use of information. Its main themes are document retrieval for official documents, and information extraction and automated analysis of historical materials. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Information Curation Lab."

The Image Science Lab studies image, video, and multimedia signal processing, as well as medical imaging. By drawing on new technologies such as imaging science, compressed sensing, and machine learning, together with its knowledge of established techniques built up over the years, the lab aims to contribute to the advancement of image processing. In medical imaging, the lab works on techniques for producing images of structures inside the human body from data measured by devices such as CT and PET, and on image analysis that supports diagnosis.

The Computational Geometry and Graphics Lab studies a wide range of subjects, including people, terrain, and fonts, centered on computer graphics (CG) and image processing. The lab works on techniques for editing the clothing, age, and pose of people in images, and on generating and editing terrain landscapes using weather satellite data. In addition to an all-member lab seminar and group meetings, the lab holds individual research meetings and actively encourages students to present their research outside the university. The lab was renamed in March 2018 from the "Non-Numerical Processing Algorithms Lab."
