The Cognitive Systems Design Lab studies human-machine systems in which humans and machines work together. Based on the characteristics of human cognition, judgment, and action, the lab investigates mechanisms by which humans and computers cooperate according to the situation, and the human interfaces needed for them. The lab studies interaction and collaboration between humans and automated systems in automobiles, ships, aviation, railways, drones, and more. It focuses especially on automobiles and has also carried out joint research with automobile manufacturers.

With the major goal of guaranteeing software correctness, the Program Logic Lab studies logic-based foundational theory of software. The lab applies this theory to research on software verification, synthesis, and transformation. Its research is built on three pillars: the theory of programming languages based on lambda calculus and type theory, program transformation, and verification through model checking and theorem proving. The lab is led by Professor Yukiyoshi Kameyama. Undergraduate students from the College of Information Science and graduate students from the Degree Programs in Computer Science belong to it.

The Knowledge and Data Engineering Lab studies data engineering for making use of big data, along with the foundational technologies of related fields. Centered on databases and data mining, the lab also draws on the latest results in machine learning and AI. At the Center for Computational Sciences, the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research, and the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine, the lab also conducts research and development in collaboration with the fields of science and medicine.

The Machine Learning and Data Mining Lab aims to improve the reliability of machine learning and data mining through algorithm development and theoretical analysis based on mathematical statistics. In particular, the lab tackles problems caused by "data bias," where the data used for learning becomes skewed unintentionally. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "MDL Lab."

The Interactive Programming Lab (IPLAB) conducts research on human interfaces and software. Its distinguishing feature is that it goes beyond logical consideration and puts into practice the creation of software by actually writing programs. In particular, the lab has produced a variety of research results on GUIs (graphical user interfaces) and visual programming. It promotes exchange with researchers outside the university and private-sector manufacturers, and encourages presenting papers at academic conferences, including international conferences.

The Black-Box Optimization Lab mainly studies the design and analysis of black-box optimization techniques such as evolutionary computation. Applications to engineering design and optimal control, reinforcement learning, and automated machine learning are also among its research subjects. The lab is also interested in the design principles and theoretical analysis of evolutionary computation, trustworthy AI technologies based on robust optimization and reinforcement learning, and the use of generative models. It is a lab of the College of Information Science at the University of Tsukuba and of the Computer Science Program in the graduate school.

The System Dependability Lab studies technologies that capture uncertain factors in AI systems, such as errors, failures, and degradation, to realize more dependable and efficient AI systems. Using probabilistic models, the lab quantitatively evaluates reliability and performance, and also works on design optimization while considering quality trade-offs. Its research targets include systems that use machine learning, systems that use UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), and long-running software. The lab's website presents it under the name "Dependable AI Systems Lab (DAIS)."

The Visualization and Interactive Systems Lab studies, with information visualization as its central theme, methods for representing data visually to make it easier to understand. The lab works on designing visual representations of information, developing techniques for rendering them, applying visualization technology, and investigating human visual characteristics. The lab's website presents visualization as one effective means of understanding data.

The Evolutionary Computation Lab studies methods for reproducing the mechanisms of biological evolution inside computers. The lab believes this mechanism can be used both for optimization to solve engineering problems and for research that creates life within artificial systems. It is also interested in simulations of evolving agents and of agents that behave like living things. The lab's website is the personal research page of Associate Professor Claus Aranha, and it is written in English.

The Software Lab studies system software, which is essential for today's computers to function. For example, without an operating system a computer is just a box, and without a compiler programs cannot run. Undergraduate thesis, master's, and doctoral research is under way in operating systems and virtualization, distributed systems, and language processing systems. The lab's educational policy is to draw out and develop each individual's abilities.
