The Marine Life Genetic Information Lab conducts research aimed at making effective use of fish genetic resources. Unlike mineral resources, genetic resources can be used almost indefinitely if they are properly managed. The lab studies the mechanisms of development, growth, and metamorphosis in aquatic organisms at the molecular level. It also works on genetic breeding, the conservation of genetic resources in wild populations, and the development of computational methods for comparing nucleotide sequences. In addition, the lab develops experimental methods, such as genome editing, for studying gene function in non-model organisms, including Japanese flounder.

The Crop Science Lab studies crops that serve as human food and industrial raw materials, aiming to increase yields and improve production techniques. Its subjects are crops grown over wide areas of land that support people's food supply and livelihoods. Amid changes such as global warming, soil degradation, and rural depopulation and aging, the lab aims to contribute to sustaining and advancing agricultural production. The lab actively conducts surveys and research not only within the university and Japan but also overseas.

The lab conducts research aimed at developing sustainable crop production technologies that are in harmony with the environment. Based on research in fields inside and outside the center, it explores the environment, especially the relationship between soil and plants. Agriculture is not free of environmental impact either, and it is required to enhance soil productivity and the sustainability of crop production while reducing environmental impact. The lab is located at the Field Science Center, Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tohoku University, in Naruko Onsen, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture.

The Coastal Field Bioproduction Lab is advancing a new research area called seascape genetics or genomics, which combines population genetics of marine organisms with elements of environmental ecology. The lab is based at the Education and Research Center for Composite Ecological Fields (commonly known as the Onagawa Field Center) in Onagawa Town, Oshika District. In the surrounding Sanriku coastal region, the meeting of the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents creates a highly productive ecosystem, making it one of the world's leading fishing grounds. The lab aims to clarify the evolution and population structure of coastal species and to contribute to resource conservation and sustainable use.

The Animal Environmental Management lab aims to solve problems brought about by microorganisms, such as disease in animals and abnormalities in environmental hygiene, from the perspectives of veterinary medicine and microbiology. Focusing on infectious diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis, the lab investigates how pathogenic microorganisms infect host cells and multiply in them. The lab also takes up resource recycling through composting and methanation, and wastewater treatment using microbial fuel cells, as research topics. The lab is based mainly at the Kawatabi Field Science Center.

The Horticultural Science lab studies horticultural crops such as vegetables, fruits, and cut flowers, which are familiar in people's lives and important to industry. It aims to develop techniques that improve the taste, appearance, and functionality of harvested produce, as well as techniques that enable production at times of year when harvesting was previously not possible. Stress-tolerant horticultural crops that can cope with global warming, and environmentally friendly cultivation methods that keep production costs low, are also subjects of study. The lab analyzes enzymes and genes involved in crop growth and functionality, as well as the environmental conditions suited to cultivation.

The Animal Breeding and Genetics lab clarifies the genetic mechanisms of animals useful to humans, such as cattle and pigs, and researches how breeding improvement can supply inexpensive, delicious, and safe livestock products. It is one of the few labs in Japan that studies quantitative genetics using statistics. The lab emphasizes accurately predicting the genetic ability of individual animals and producing offspring with high ability. It also conducts research that contributes to sustainable livestock production, in order to mitigate and adapt to climate change such as global warming.

The Applied Entomology Lab studies how insects choose the plants they feed on, and pest control technologies that use light. The lab investigates which plant chemicals are involved in host plant selection, the process by which insects search for food plants, feed on them, and lay eggs. The other pillar of its work is research on controlling pest behavior with blue LED light, aiming at pest control technologies that can replace insecticides.

The Environmental Economics Lab covers a wide range of areas, including the natural environment, the food environment, and risk environments, and uses socioeconomic methods to conduct research aimed at solving everyday problems. Its main methods are social surveys and data analysis. By revealing people's unrevealed preferences, the lab explores ways to make better institutions and consensus building possible. The lab also works on international comparisons of the promotion of organic farming, and on research that evaluates in monetary terms the benefits that humans and society receive from the natural environment.

The Animal Functional Morphology Lab studies how the function and form of organs involved in animal immunity are established. Newborn livestock have immature immune systems and are exposed to the risk of infection by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. The lab focuses on how maternally transferred immunity is passed from mother to offspring and how the young acquire and develop their own immune function, examining immune-related organs in the mother and in offspring around weaning. The lab aims to identify molecules involved in immune function in mothers and offspring, and to use them as targets to build a production system for livestock with enhanced immune function.
