The Animal Microbiology Lab studies the "virulence" of pathogenic microorganisms relevant to livestock and environmental hygiene. Focusing on microbial metabolism, physiological phenomena, and immune mechanisms, it investigates questions such as "what makes a pathogen harmful," "how does it spread," and "how do drug-resistant pathogens differ?" Ticks, which parasitize animals and feed on their blood, and the pathogens that ticks carry are also research subjects. Using the findings, the lab is also developing new control measures against infectious diseases, such as antimicrobial agents.

The lab conducts research to improve the health and physiological functions of livestock such as cattle and pigs, and to make use of safe, highly functional animal-derived foods. Drawing on food immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, and carbohydrate chemistry, the lab pursues health and functionality from the perspective of animal production science. It focuses on probiotics, such as lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, that function in fermented milk, cheese, and feed additives, and investigates how they modulate mucosal immunity. Students and staff isolate functional bacteria from milk and intestinal samples and explore their potential.

The Farm Management Lab conducts research in line with each student's own concerns. Because students choose the topics of their bachelor's, master's, and doctoral theses themselves, the subjects vary widely, including corporate entry into agriculture, agricultural consultants, and heat-tolerant paddy rice varieties. For students who are unsure what they want to do, the lab provides guidance suited to their worries, such as helping them think about what they are interested in. The lab aims to be a place where members think things through together by discussing them.

The Regional Resource Planning Lab takes the field sites of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and rural areas in Japan and abroad as its subjects, comprehensively analyzes the issues they face, and examines ways to overcome them. Drawing on knowledge from the social sciences and natural sciences, the lab conducts education and research aimed at building new social systems. On the lab's page, it is introduced as the Field Socio-Technology Division.

The Forest Ecology Lab conducts research to protect species diversity and genetic diversity, focusing on forest plants around the world and endangered species. By examining DNA information, the lab clarifies genetic uniqueness and the evolutionary and distributional history of species, and applies the findings to conservation measures. For forest microbes, the lab investigates which microbes live where, and how they relate to climate change and to other organisms. The lab's main facility is at the Kawatabi Field Center in Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture, and it also has a laboratory at Aobayama.

The Grassland Animal Production Ecology Lab studies the relationships among soil, plants, and animals, centered on animal production on grassland. It applies the findings to livestock farming, aiming to advance sustainable animal production that takes animal welfare into account. Its main current research subject is grazing-based animal production. Moving away from livestock farming that mass-produces meat and milk cheaply, the lab aims to develop grazing production technologies that value ecosystem conservation and animal welfare. The main research site is the affiliated Complex Ecosystem Field Education and Research Center in Naruko Onsen, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture.

The Aquatic Plant Ecology Lab studies seaweed beds, the seaweed communities that form on coastal rocky reefs, from the perspective of the interactions between seaweeds and herbivores. Marine forests formed by large brown algae such as kelps and Sargassum species are also places where fish and shellfish live and spawn, and where their larvae and juveniles grow. Centered on field surveys using SCUBA diving, the lab also carries out rearing and culture experiments in the laboratory and genetic analysis. Working with people in the fishing industry and researchers at food companies, the lab has also carried out research aimed at improving wakame farming techniques and raising the quality of sea urchins.

The Animal Nutritional Biochemistry Lab is a lab in the field of animal nutritional biochemistry at the Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tohoku University. Tohoku University's researcher directory lists animal production science, animal physiological chemistry, physiology, and ethology as the research fields of Professor Sato. At the graduate level, the lab belongs to the Animal Life Science Division of the Department of Biological Production Science.

The Biological Oceanography Lab studies plankton living in the sea, with the aim of clarifying material cycles in the ocean mediated by living organisms. The lab investigates plankton from two perspectives: the fisheries science perspective of sustaining the use of marine biological resources over the long term, and the oceanography perspective of plankton as the driving force that carries carbon fixed at the surface down to the deep sea. Professor Yamaguchi is in charge of zooplankton and the open ocean, and Associate Professor Nishitani is in charge of phytoplankton and coastal areas. The lab covers both zooplankton and phytoplankton, from coastal areas to the deep sea of the open ocean.

The Plant Engineering for Environmental Adaptation Lab conducts genetic engineering research on rice genes (DNA). Main themes include production of useful proteins, improving the saccharification of rice straw, food production through cell culture, and cytoplasmic male sterility, in which pollen dies. The lab's mascot is "Okome-chan," a character whose body is a grain of rice.
