The Fisheries Resource Ecology Lab studies the ways of life of fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and other organisms living in the ocean, rivers, and lakes. In addition to their feeding, growth, and reproduction, the lab examines relationships among organisms and with their environment, aiming to understand how nature works. The lab believes that understanding how nature works is the foundation for continuing to use biological resources, an essential source of food for people, sustainably into the future.

The Plant Genetics and Breeding Lab studies the genes involved in useful traits, and their functions, using mainly Brassicaceae plants and rice. The lab also works on developing breeding techniques by examining genetic variation. Main research topics include self-incompatibility, the genetic mechanisms of environmental stress tolerance, and the conservation and management of Brassicaceae genetic resources.

The Plant Pathology Lab studies the interaction and evolution of cucumber mosaic virus and plants. At the molecular level, it investigates how plants fend off viruses and what viruses do when they infect a plant without causing disease. Another line of research combines experiments with mathematical modeling to analyze the social behavior shown by virus populations. The lab aims to establish control technologies that target weaknesses in the viruses' social systems.

The Animal Physiology Lab studies the physiology of digestion and nutrition in ruminants such as beef cattle, dairy cows, and sheep. For beef cattle, it analyzes "physiological and biological information" that combines data ranging from blood and rumen components and gene expression in tissues to performance at shipment, aiming to create husbandry technologies. For dairy cows, it works on developing technologies to lower the risk of diseases and reproductive disorders that are common around calving. The lab originated in the livestock physiology chair of the Faculty of Agriculture at Tohoku Imperial University, and it also values developing people through research.

The International Development Studies Lab studies the policies and institutions needed to solve problems of food, resources, and the environment. Its keywords are Asia, Africa, development, resources, food, agriculture, policies and institutions, and agribusiness. Drawing on findings from area studies of Asia and Africa and analytical methods from development economics, the lab aims for research that is both empirical and theoretical. Students are also expected to go directly into the field, in developing and developed countries, to conduct research.

The Animal Reproductive Science Lab studies reproductive phenomena at the molecular level, using mammals (mice, pigs, and cattle). In addition to investigating how sperm function and how they are produced, the lab analyzes the effects of environmental chemicals on embryogenesis and development. One of its goals is to develop techniques for artificially manipulating reproductive phenomena, as well as developmental engineering technologies. In the endowed research unit “Reproductive Technology Development Laboratory Repro-SOLEIL,” the lab works to advance and improve advanced assisted reproductive technologies, mainly targeting male infertility.

The Soil Science Lab studies soil from three perspectives: as the foundation of food production, as a sink and source of elements, and as a habitat for living organisms. Most of the food people eat is produced through soil, and soil is also the environment in which more than half of the organisms on Earth live. The lab's work ranges from practical field research to experiments that combine the latest analytical techniques. The lab takes a broad view in tackling problems through soil, with the aim of building sustainable agricultural systems that can respond to environmental change.

The Fisheries Resource Chemistry Lab investigates the biochemical and food-chemical properties of aquatic biological resources such as fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and seaweed, using every available analytical method. The lab considers the sustainable and efficient use of aquatic biological resources essential, because these resources are finite. At the same time, these organisms are highly diverse, and as a result of evolution and adaptation to their environments, they contain various functional substances that are useful for promoting human health and preventing disease. The lab's ultimate theme is to provide education and research that apply these properties to production, utilization, and the development of biological functions, and to train people who can succeed in this field.

The Aquatic Animal Physiology Lab studies the mechanisms of reproduction at the tissue, cell, and molecular levels in bivalves and sea urchins, which have large catches and high aquaculture production in northern Japan. The lab believes that technology to control sex and maturation would secure a stable supply of the next generation and help produce individuals whose commercial value varies with sex and maturity. The lab aims to apply its findings to advanced aquaculture and stock enhancement technology.
