The Medical Pharmacy Education and Research Center conducts pharmacist practice education and research that serves as a bridge to clinical practice. The center consists of faculty members from the Cancer Chemotherapy Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, and Genomic Medicine labs in the Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences Division of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, together with the center's own faculty members. The faculty includes an associate professor who serves as Deputy Director of the Department of Pharmacy at Tohoku University Hospital.

The Pathophysiological and Molecular Pharmaceutics Lab is led by the Professor who is also Director of the Department of Pharmacy at Tohoku University Hospital, and it is a cooperating chair of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Taking advantage of being located inside a hospital, the lab conducts research aimed at providing patients with safe, high-quality drug therapy and at elucidating the mechanisms of disease pathophysiology. As its core technologies, the lab uses liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyze molecules and drugs in the body with high sensitivity. In the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Medicine, the lab serves as a cooperating chair in Clinical Pharmacy, and it carries out its research in collaboration with the clinical departments of the university hospital and with other labs.

The Modomics Pharmaceutical Sciences Lab studies "modomics," the comprehensive investigation of the chemical modifications that occur on molecules in the body. Focusing in particular on RNA modifications, the lab investigates how they relate to physiological functions such as metabolism, immunity, and aging, and to human diseases. The lab is introduced on the same site as the Modomics Medicine lab at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, Tohoku University. Lab visits are accepted at any time.

Isshin Shiiba, Assistant Professor

The Biological Regulation Systems Lab (the Shiiba Lab) studies how organelles function, looking at their connections within cells and between organs and tissues. The lab seeks to elucidate at the molecular level how organelles such as mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum coordinate with one another in cells, and how this mechanism differs from organ to organ. The lab aims to clarify the molecular basis of diseases involving the breakdown of organelle function, and to use this to identify new drug targets and develop therapeutic strategies. The lab was established in April 2026 at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku University.

The Tahara Research Group calls simple hydrocarbons such as methane (the main component of natural gas), carbon dioxide, and wood-derived biomass compounds "buried" carbon resources, and studies how to make them more highly functional. Building on organometallic chemistry, the group combines it with research areas such as chemical engineering, biochemistry, computational science, and polymer chemistry, and takes on problems from angles different from existing methods. The group was launched in April 2021 and conducts research and education in cooperation with the lab of Professor Takayuki Doi (Reaction Control Chemistry, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences). On the lab's website, the group is introduced under the name "Tahara Research Group."
