The lab studies the relationship between humans and the community of microorganisms living in the mouth (the oral microbiome). Using molecular biology methods, anaerobic experimental systems, and omics, the lab investigates how the oral microbiome relates to oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and halitosis. The lab also studies how the metabolic functions of the oral microbiome affect the whole body, as well as the metabolism of cancer cells. Graduate students have included not only graduates of dental schools but also registered dietitians, pharmacists, and medical laboratory technologists.

The lab conducts education and research that clarify the interplay between oral microorganisms and host immunity, in order to protect systemic health starting from the mouth. The mouth is a front line that faces infection every day, and within it pathogenic microorganisms, the commensal microbiota, and the immune system interact in a complex three-way struggle. From the standpoint of basic research, the lab centers on immune responses and focuses on those induced by oral pathogenic bacteria. In an environment where the faculty act as coaches who draw out students' initiative and respect the individual, members come from diverse backgrounds, not only dental school graduates.

The lab studies two chronic inflammatory conditions: periodontal disease, one of the two major infectious diseases of the oral cavity, and endodontic disease, which is caused by infection of the pulp/dentin complex. The lab aims to clarify how these diseases develop and progress, and to develop regenerative therapies for periodontal tissue and for the pulp and dentin. The lab is in charge of the Periodontics Clinic and the Endodontics Clinic in the dental division of Tohoku University Hospital, and conducts clinical research and clinical trials alongside treatment. The lab belongs to the Department of Ecological Dentistry.

The lab provides education centered on conservative treatment, including operative dentistry and endodontics, and conducts research aimed at realizing regenerative medicine. It is building a new kind of conservative dentistry that combines the etiology and treatment techniques of traditional conservative dentistry with basic knowledge of regenerative medicine. Its research is built around three axes, bone regeneration, inflammation and endodontics, and oral and systemic health management, and takes up problems that dentists face in clinical practice. The lab also collaborates with the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Medicine, aiming to bring its research results into practical use.

The lab studies how individual health, including oral health, is strongly related to the community people live in and their socioeconomic conditions. Working together with local governments and other bodies, it aims to build a better society. It investigates how trust in people and society and social bonds (social capital) affect oral health, and it also works on long-term care prevention and community-based integrated care. The lab also trains people for international cooperation, including in developing countries.

The lab studies forensic dentistry, which seeks to contribute to the aims of forensic medicine from the specialized standpoint of dental medicine. Forensic medicine is the field of medicine that gives scientific and impartial medical judgments on legal matters that require medical clarification or advice. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, many staff members of Tohoku University took part in identifying the victims. The lab was established in the summer of 2013 as the first forensic dentistry department in northern Japan.

The Preventive Dentistry Lab studies issues in oral health and dental care for individuals and communities, placing oral health at the center of overall health. The lab considers oral health to be more than the absence of disease: it is a state in which a person can eat, speak, and smile without difficulty. Preventive dentistry applies all levels of preventive medicine, from primary to tertiary prevention, to the oral cavity, and it provides a basic mindset for anyone involved in oral health and dental care. The lab is in charge of the Department of Oral Supportive Care at Tohoku University Hospital, where its research centers on perioperative oral management for patients undergoing treatment in other medical departments.

The Developmental Pediatric Dentistry Lab conducts broad research on children, aiming for the healthy development of the oral cavity in childhood. Teeth are formed through the complex interaction of many molecules. The lab investigates the relationships among these molecules, analyzing the mechanisms of tooth formation and working on technologies for tooth regeneration. It also applies the image analysis techniques developed in its cell biology research to the evaluation of clinical images and new dental materials.

The Craniofacial Anomalies Lab is a clinical dentistry lab that conducts research on the diagnosis and treatment of congenital craniofacial anomalies such as cleft lip and cleft palate. At the hospital, the lab mainly treats malocclusion and jaw deformities caused by congenital craniofacial anomalies, and it practices team-based care in cooperation with other departments inside and outside the hospital. Its clinical unit, the Oral and Maxillofacial Function Treatment Department, is an institution designated by the Japanese Orthodontic Society for training certified orthodontists and supervising orthodontists, and it provides postgraduate specialist education in orthodontics. The lab belongs to the Department of Dentistry for a Community-Inclusive Society in the Graduate School of Dentistry.

The lab studies how to diagnose and treat abnormalities in the form and function of the jaws and mouth that change with growth and aging. It also aims to clarify the mechanisms of tooth movement and maxillofacial growth, and pursues both clinical research on human subjects and basic biological research. The lab has also worked on developing orthodontic techniques that use orthodontic anchor screws.
