The Epileptology Lab at Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine sets out to master epilepsy as a disease. Epilepsy is a disease in which the brain's excitation, that is, seizures, occurs repeatedly. The lab's website says that with the latest treatment, many patients can lead ordinary lives. Patients have many concerns besides seizures, and the lab says it works together with them to resolve those as well.

Medical Oncology is a clinical department of Tohoku University Hospital that upholds the idea of "creating a society where everyone can live with peace of mind and hope, even with cancer." The lab aims to provide care that lets all cancer patients keep their hope, and to keep creating new treatment options. In the member introductions, the professor states that the department carries out clinical care and research with the attitude of "learning from patients, learning more, and giving back to patients." The department accepts applications from students and residents for hospital visits.

The Perinatal Medicine Lab focuses its research on developing diagnostic methods and treatments for preterm birth. Using pregnant mice and sheep, the lab searches for markers that detect intrauterine inflammation and works on developing an artificial uterus and artificial placenta, among other projects. The lab looks for answers to questions encountered in the clinic, such as "What causes preterm birth?" and "How can we reduce the number of preterm births?" The lab also makes an effort to write up, as papers, facts and new findings from clinical practice that should be widely shared with pregnant women.

The lab provides clinical care and conducts research to cleanly repair "appearance problems" caused by congenital conditions, injuries, and cancer treatment. For congenital facial conditions such as cleft lip and palate, the lab performs craniomaxillofacial surgery, including distraction osteogenesis, at the Cleft Lip, Jaw, and Palate Center, which it runs jointly with dentistry. For reconstruction of the face and breast after tissue is lost to cancer treatment, the lab performs free composite tissue transfer, using a microscope to transplant tissue from a healthy part of the patient's own body. For severe head and facial trauma, the lab treats patients together with the emergency department, aiming for treatment that allows an early return to society.

The lab aims to return findings from cohort studies to clinical practice. Based on the birth three-generation cohort study, the lab conducts research that looks at the entire life course, from the fetal period to adulthood. It analyzes the safety of medications during pregnancy and lactation, maternal and child health, and the risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases. Making use of genomic and real-world data as well, the lab advances research that leads to next-generation preventive medicine and personalized medicine.

The Ogishima Lab (Genomic Medicine Informatics) conducts research on informatics for genomic medicine. Taking each individual's genetic factors as a background and also considering the influence of environmental factors, the lab aims to clarify the mechanisms of disease onset and progression. It integrates data such as genome and omics information and medical information, and works to elucidate these mechanisms using informatics methods such as large-scale data analysis and machine learning. The lab belongs to the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization and the Graduate School of Medicine.

The Genome Preventive Medicine field studies the mechanisms that regulate gene expression and builds the foundation for using genomic information in medicine. Using mast cells, a type of blood cell, as its subject, the lab investigates how gene activity is determined for each cell type. It also promotes the use of the integrated biobank of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization and conducts research on returning disease risk based on genetic information to individuals.

The Biomolecular Analysis Lab is based at the Center for Future Medical Innovation and conducts research with keywords such as omics, structural analysis, and metabolome. Its research fields are listed as structural biochemistry, medical biochemistry, and functional biochemistry. Nuclear magnetic resonance and cryo-electron microscopy are also listed among its research keywords.

The Immunology Lab studies how immune cells work to protect the body and why abnormalities in them lead to disease. Built on three pillars—immune memory, group 2 innate lymphoid cells involved in allergy, and T cell homeostasis—the lab investigates these topics using genetically modified mice and other tools. The lab originated from the Department of Bacteriology, which was established in 1915 (Taisho 4) at the same time as the Medical College of Tohoku Imperial University. The graduate student recruitment section on the lab's top page says that its members come from diverse backgrounds, including graduates of science and engineering faculties and students who entered graduate school as working professionals.

The Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Lab chooses clinical questions from anesthesia care, intensive care, and the pain clinic as its research themes, and conducts both clinical and basic research. From professors to residents, every member continues clinical work centered on anesthesia in the operating rooms of the university hospital while also engaging in research. The lab holds that, precisely because its members are physicians working on the clinical front line, they can carry out research that is useful in daily anesthesia practice and that basic medical scientists would find difficult to conceive. It is a department with the history and tradition of having been the second of its kind established in Japan.
