Motomu Sakai, Lecturer
0 student voices
The Sakai Lab conducts research using ordered porous materials that have nano-sized pores, such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The lab carries out research that contributes to the fields of energy, carbon neutrality, and the environment. Using ordered porous materials, the lab works on making chemical reaction and separation/purification processes far more energy-efficient and effective. These materials are used in the home as deodorants and disinfectants, and in industry as adsorbents for purifying exhaust gas and as catalysts for various chemical reactions.
Mai Takashima, Lecturer
0 student voices
The Takashima Lab investigates in detail the relationships among how a material is made, its structure, and its properties. Even a small change in how a material is made can change its structure, and as a result its properties and functions can change greatly. Its research themes include artificial photosynthesis reactions using photocatalysts and methods for measuring the surface structure of powder materials. The lab was newly established in fiscal year 2025.
Keiichi Imamoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Imamoto Lab studies the preservation of pioneering-era buildings and the architecture of the future from the perspective of building materials. The lab also works on preserving World Heritage-related buildings, such as the structures on Gunkanjima (Hashima Island) and the structural frame of the main building of the National Museum of Western Art. Developing new materials is also a research theme, including building materials that use phase change materials and cement-free concrete. Through the prediction of deterioration in exterior finishing materials and non-destructive techniques for estimating deterioration in reinforced concrete, the lab studies maintenance methods that make buildings last longer.
Takumi Ito, Professor
0 student voices
The Ito (Takumi) Lab studies the structural performance and design methods of steel structures, including buildings made of steel frames. The lab investigates how steel structures behave under random disturbances by combining mathematical theory, numerical analysis, and various structural experiments. It also develops structural systems for regenerating structures, using hybrid structures that make the most of the properties of each material. The list of research themes also includes composite structures combining steel, earth, and timber, the use of IoT in building structures, and repair techniques using digital fabrication.
Masaki Kato, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kato Lab studies the fire resistance of building structures. Its listed research topics include research on elucidating the explosive spalling of high-strength concrete in fires. Associate Professor Masaki Kato has worked on the fire resistance of building structures since 2010 and joined the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering in April 2023.
Makoto Yamakawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamakawa Lab treats the safety, economy, usability, aesthetics, and other qualities of buildings as various kinds of performance, and studies the relationship between these performances and design using a mathematical method called structural optimization. It explores which structures are advantageous and what universal properties they have. The research mathematically analyzes architectural design.
Naoya Kawabe, Professor
0 student voices
The Kawabe Lab studies the organization of given conditions and logical processes in architectural design and design in general. Its listed research topics include architectural design and its process, collaboration between architecture and specialists in other fields, and architecture connected to society and the environment based on field research. Its research background includes studies of the construction details of contemporary houses and of architecture that incorporates the fine-grained peculiarities of the surrounding environment.
Shingo Saito, Lecturer
0 student voices
The Design Lecturer Lab conducts research on architectural materials of modern and contemporary architecture, as well as research on theories of architectural space and their practice. It continues research based on archival materials of modern and contemporary architecture. In its research on the architect Kiyonori Kikutake, it focuses on the origins of Metabolism and the thinking in his early works.
Sihwan Lee, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Lee Lab is a research group exploring building science, including thermal, air, light, acoustic, and water environments, building services, field measurements, and numerical analysis. The lab aims to develop design technologies that accurately predict and evaluate the invisible physical phenomena occurring inside and outside buildings, so as to ensure occupants' safety and comfortable living. It tackles a wide range of issues, including evaluating ventilation efficiency, predicting the behavior of indoor pollutants, analyzing thermal comfort, energy-saving buildings, disaster prevention, and infection control. The lab is always looking for people with diverse backgrounds, such as architectural engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science.
Madoka Kayanoki, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kayanoki Lab studies the history of modern architecture and urban history. It investigates architecture built during the reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the fireproofing of cities. The urban planning and architecture carried out in prewar Taiwan are also objects of study. The lab has also conducted research on the transformation of Tokyo and on the preservation of historic environments.
