The Cellular Function Engineering Lab studies the mechanisms behind the useful capabilities of microorganisms at the molecular level, including proteins and genes. The lab also conducts applied research that uses its findings to further enhance useful functions and to produce more useful enzymes and compounds. It combines a wide range of methods, from natural product chemistry and molecular biology to protein engineering and X-ray crystallography. Its research targets diverse microorganisms, including thermophiles, actinomycetes, and Corynebacterium.

The Fermentation Microbiology Lab studies the diverse biological phenomena exhibited by microorganisms. In particular, it focuses on actinomycetes, soil bacteria that produce antibiotics and other compounds, and examines the mechanisms behind their morphological changes and compound production. The lab searches for new biosynthetic enzymes for compounds made by microorganisms, investigates how they work, and also takes on the production of useful substances. It is a lab committed to originality in research and to carrying out experiments thoroughly.

The Molecular Breeding Lab conducts research under the keywords "elucidating and exploring microbial functions." The lab discovers unknown functions encoded in microbial genes and uncovers the basic principles behind them. It aims to apply this work to creating new useful substances and to understanding the complex interactions between organisms. Its research rests on two pillars: studies of enzymes that produce natural compounds, and studies of how microorganisms adapt to stress.

The Biological Information Engineering Lab uses computers to study how proteins work. The lab uses a wide range of computational biology methods, including bioinformatics, molecular simulation, and machine learning. Its work includes calculating how enzymes drive chemical reactions, simulating protein motion, and predicting protein function. The lab also actively carries out joint research with experimental researchers.

The Nutritional Chemistry Lab studies brain nutrition, a field that focuses on the brain, nutrition, and food. The lab investigates how memories of food regulate eating behavior and how memories are controlled in the brain. It uses a variety of methods, including behavioral analysis and imaging in mice, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The lab is also working on developing treatments for psychiatric disorders, including PTSD.

The Pedosphere Science Lab studies the properties and functions of soil. Soil is a mixture of minerals, organic matter, and microorganisms, and it has attracted attention as a key hub in the cycling of carbon and nutrients. Building on soil science, biogeochemistry, and microbial ecology, the lab uses a wide range of methods, from field surveys and laboratory experiments to synchrotron X-ray analysis. The lab is recruiting graduate students and postdocs who aim to become researchers active worldwide.

The Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer Lab studies how plants absorb, transport, and use nutrients. To support future food production while reducing environmental impact, the lab conducts research on plant nutrition. Alongside basic research that uncovers these mechanisms, the lab aims to develop crops that grow with less fertilizer and plants that help protect the environment. Lab visits are accepted at any time.

The Hisatsune Lab studies how the brain works, with the aim of preventing brain aging and dementia. The brain was long thought to only decline once we reach adulthood, but the lab's research has shown that the adult brain retains the ability to grow and repair itself. The lab conducts research on learning and memory using mouse models of Alzheimer's disease, as well as research on preventing brain aging with the cooperation of elderly volunteers. It has become clear that brain aging can be slowed to some extent by improving lifestyle habits, and the lab hopes to improve brain health and thereby support healthy longevity.

The Applied Entomology Lab studies the special abilities, functions, and behavioral mechanisms of insects. The lab pursues both basic research that explores the wonders of biological phenomena and research that uses insect abilities to create new technologies. For example, it is developing a circular food production system that uses black soldier flies. The lab was formerly the Pest Entomology Lab and is the lab responsible for entomology in the Faculty of Agriculture.

The Biometrics Lab studies methods for understanding life phenomena from the standpoint of biometrics and bioinformatics. The information obtained by observing and measuring organisms is often unclear and vast, so it is not easy to find biological meaning in it as it is. The lab develops and uses statistical methods and algorithms, working on approaches for obtaining new insights and interpretations from such information. Because the data and methods it handles are so diverse, research themes vary from member to member.
