The Library and Information Science Lab studies how knowledge and information can be collected, organized, and made usable, from a social perspective that centers on libraries and people. Its themes range widely, from libraries and the nature of books to web technologies, the organization and representation of knowledge, the structure of specialized vocabularies, and translation studies. The lab's basic philosophy is to think about technology from the standpoint of supporting people's intellectual learning. Graduate students carry out research on their own topics under supervision, and report on their progress at a joint lab seminar attended by all graduate students and faculty members.

The Yamana Lab studies human “growth” and education in the fields of philosophy of education and the history of ideas. By examining, through philosophy and the history of ideas, the notions and values that people are bound by without realizing it, the lab relativizes them and explores new interpretations of education and “growth.” Recently, the lab has been developing “Memory Pedagogy,” an approach that reconsiders education from the perspectives of collective memory and the culture of remembrance.
