Shoji Takeuchi, Professor
Bio & Life Sciences4 student voices
Takeuchi-Nie Lab researches "biohybrid systems" that combine living organisms and machines. Its motto is "Think Hybrid," blending fields such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information science, biology, chemistry, and materials science. Using MEMS, microfluidic devices, and tissue engineering, the lab works on a new approach to manufacturing that treats DNA, proteins, and cells as "components." Its research includes muscle-powered robots, odor sensors, cultured meat, and transplantable organs.

Hirokazu Sugiyama, Professor
3 student voices
The Sugiyama-Badr Lab studies process systems engineering (PSE), a branch of chemical engineering. The lab represents steps such as reaction and separation, and the whole processes made up of them, with mathematical models, and searches for optimal systems through simulation. Its main targets are pharmaceutical manufacturing and energy and sustainability issues such as a hydrogen society and recycling. The lab conducts research with awareness of the connections from molecules and cells to processes and social systems.

Moju Zhao, Lecturer
Robotics & Control3 student voices
Zhao Lab (DRAGON Lab) researches new robotics grounded in mechanical dynamics. At the center of its work are robots with rotors built into each segment of a jointed body, which allows them to fly. The lab works on the design and control of robots that can not only fly but also walk on the ground and grasp objects in midair. The lab also researches robots that autonomously patrol and inspect factories and forests.

Takuma Ito, Lecturer
Robotics & Control3 student voices
The Intelligent Mobility Lab studies next-generation mobility that combines two approaches to intelligence: autonomous and cooperative. The lab works on perceiving driving environments using onboard sensors and IoT technology, autonomous control of various vehicles, and human-machine cooperative control. Its research covers not only cars but also personal mobility, meaning single-seat electric vehicles. The lab aims to contribute to a safe and secure mobility society.

Ikuya Kinefuchi, Professor
Fluids & Heat3 student voices
The Kinefuchi Lab studies the behavior of gases and liquids flowing through extremely small spaces. In microscopic spaces, a fluid cannot be treated as a continuous medium, and its behavior must be understood from the motion of molecules. Aiming at the utilization of hydrogen and the capture of carbon dioxide, the lab works to elucidate phenomena that occur near interfaces. It investigates how water and gases are transported within the catalyst layers of fuel cells and within membranes that separate carbon dioxide.

Shohei Chiashi, Associate Professor
Materials & Nanotech3 student voices
The Chiashi Lab studies nanoscale materials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. These nanomaterials have interesting properties that differ from those of ordinary materials. The lab develops techniques for making nanomaterials and methods for analyzing them, and carries out research toward their applications. While contributing to the advancement of nanotechnology, the lab also aims to help solve environmental and energy problems.

Hirofumi Daiguji, Professor
Fluids & Heat3 student voices
The Daiguji-Hsu Lab studies energy and transport phenomena, particularly machines that heat and cool. The lab approaches heat and mass transport from first principles, including phase change, chemical reactions, and movement in the nano- and microscale world, with the aim of improving the performance and efficiency of machines. The lab explores ways to apply nanospace materials, porous metals, superhydrophobic materials, and similar materials to real machines. Energy systems such as air-conditioning systems, turbines, and batteries are also subjects of its research.

Yoshihiro Kawahara, Professor
AI & Machine Learning3 student voices
The Kawahara Lab researches intelligent technologies that harmonize naturally with people and environments and blend into daily life without feeling out of place. In the JST ERATO project (2015–2022), the lab built its research around four technologies: fabrication, sensing, actuation (mechanisms that produce movement), and energy. Building on that foundation, the lab is now moving into research on AI that has a body and works in the real world (Embodied AI and Physical AI). The lab aims to create AI that understands real spaces and people by reading not only visual and auditory information but also tactile information and data from environmental sensors.

Ryoichi Horisaki, Professor
Imaging & Sensing3 student voices
The Information Photonics Lab studies the interdisciplinary field between optics and information science. The lab works on pioneering new optical systems and computing systems. The lab rests on two pillars: computational imaging, which aims to bring innovation to optics through information science, and AI photonics, which aims to bring innovation to information science through optics. The lab aims to design minimal, refined systems rooted in the essence of light and information.

Yamanishi Kenji, Professor
AI & Machine Learning3 student voices
The Learning Mathematical Informatics Lab studies how much knowledge computers can acquire from large amounts of data. On the theoretical side, the lab works on information-theoretic learning theory, which is based on information theory and statistics. On the practical side, it uses data mining to extract the knowledge buried deep in data, along with how that knowledge changes. The lab also works on applications to real-world data in fields such as healthcare, transportation, marketing, and education.
