Mihoko Oka, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Oka Lab studies the history of Japan in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its focus is mainly on Japan's foreign relations, chiefly with Portugal and Spain, and on the religious history of the Kirishitan (Japanese Christians) during the period known as the "Christian Century," from around 1540 to around 1640. The lab is also interested in maritime Asian history and global history, and takes care not to overestimate the influence of the European powers that expanded into Asia.

Kazutoshi Kudo, Professor
0 student voices
The Kudo Lab studies where skillfulness and proficiency in movement come from. Top athletes, dancers, and musicians acquire extremely advanced skills through daily practice. Using such expert performance as a clue, the lab investigates the differences between skilled performers and novices, as well as the path of improvement. The lab aims to clarify the principles of learning and control of expert skills and to apply the findings to motor instruction and coaching.

Ryo Uehara, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Uehara Lab uses the philosophy of science as its theoretical foundation to study the relationship between science and technology and society and humans. Its research themes include philosophical naturalism, neuroethics, self-control, creativity, and scientific culture. Students who wish to be supervised by Prof. Uehara can pursue research on topics related to these areas. After consultation, students can also take on new topics or conduct research on topics jointly with the faculty.

Kikuko Nagayoshi, Professor
0 student voices
Nagayoshi Lab studies social attitudes, international migration, and social stratification. The lab mainly uses statistical methods to analyze social survey data. It investigates what shapes people's attitudes toward accepting foreigners and toward social security policy. It also studies the socioeconomic conditions of foreign nationals living in Japan.

Hidenori Watanave, Professor
0 student voices
The Watanave Lab studies digital archives, information design, and data visualization, among other areas. Materials on wartime destruction and disasters exist to convey past memories to the future, but they are not yet put to full use. The lab turns materials that have been "stocked" in society into a "flow," and raises the value of information through the communication that arises from them. In this way, the lab studies methods for passing memory on to the future.

Toko Tanaka, Professor
0 student voices
Tanaka Lab studies media culture and gender, as well as issues of new technologies and feminism. Its areas of expertise are media culture studies, gender studies, and cultural studies. Drawing on feminism since the third wave and on popular feminism, the lab examines women's practices within media culture.

Yuko Manabe, Professor
0 student voices
Centering on South Korea, the Manabe Lab studies Korean culture and contemporary South Korean society. Although the lab's foundation is sociology, the professor takes an approach that spans multiple fields and therefore calls this specialty 'Korean Studies.' The themes cover a wide range, including Korean shamanism, the transmission of folktales, the South Korean democratization movement, and the production of Korean Wave (Hallyu) dramas. The professor believes that even themes that seem unrelated at first glance are connected through underground waterways.

Yasuaki Kakehi, Professor
0 student voices
The Kakehi Lab (xlab) studies new relationships among people, materials, environments, and information, as well as new forms of experience. Spanning HCI, design, media art, and materials research, the lab advances a concept called Material Experience Design. Moving away from screen-centered information technology, the lab reconsiders air, water, heat, light, soft materials, and plants as interfaces in their own right. In recent years, the lab has also taken up themes such as the relationship with the natural environment and ecosystems, and ways for people, information, and nature to coexist sustainably.

Fujita Yuiko, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Fujita Lab studies media and culture, race and gender, international migration, and the production of art and culture. The lab is interested in global social phenomena and approaches its research from a sociological perspective. The lab conducts ethnographic research that involves immersing itself in multiple field sites. Students interested in team-based qualitative research, presenting their work in English-speaking countries, or industry-academia collaboration with companies will find plenty of opportunities.

Takeshi Oishi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Oishi Lab works on fundamental technologies centered on 3D vision and robot vision, as well as interdisciplinary research that applies them. Its research spans computer vision, virtual, mixed, and augmented reality, robotics, and intelligent transport systems. The lab also works on 3D data processing, shape analysis, and visualization in the field of cyber-archaeology. Students can join the lab through either the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies or the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems in the Graduate School of Engineering.
