Shinpei Yoshitake, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshitake Lab studies how carbon and nitrogen cycle through terrestrial ecosystems such as forests. Carbon and nitrogen move back and forth between living organisms and the external environment while changing form, and the lab observes and describes the pathways and amounts of this cycling through field surveys. Much of what is still unknown about these cycles lies in the soil beneath our feet, so the lab focuses on the functions of soil microbial communities. Field surveys are the foundation of the lab's work, and they are combined with laboratory and cultivation experiments to confirm the detailed mechanisms.

Masaki Hoso, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Hoso Lab studies the evolutionary mechanisms that have produced the rich biodiversity we see today. Evolution is described by the physical processes involved in the inheritance of genetic material, the chance events that accompany them, and the various constraints that arise within the complex system that is life. Grounded in natural history research based on field observation and specimens, the lab pursues evolutionary biology, with a particular focus on the evolutionary ecology of animals. A particular focus is left-right asymmetry in body structure and behavior.

Yoshiki Nishimura, Associate Professor

The Nishimura Lab studies the functions of chloroplasts and mitochondria, building on the methods of molecular genetics. Chloroplasts and mitochondria are thought to have originated from independent bacteria that entered into symbiosis with the ancestors of eukaryotic cells, and they still have their own DNA and gene expression machinery. This DNA binds to proteins to form a structure called the nucleoid, but its detailed structure and regulatory mechanisms are still not understood. Using the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas and other model organisms, the lab combines microscopy, genetics, and biochemistry.
