Kyojiro Nambu, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Nambu Lab conducts research that aims to solve problems found in medical practice through the power of engineering. To date, the lab has developed quantitative diagnostic imaging methods and technologies that reduce X-ray radiation exposure, and has co-proposed "Advanced Engineering Surgery" as a field of surgery for making full use of the outcomes of engineering. It has carried out research and development on information-guided surgical devices, surgical safety engineering, and transplantation device engineering. The lab regards medical regulatory science as a methodology for pursuing fair regulation, which is essential for turning technology into products and making them widely available.

Ken Masamune, Professor
0 student voices
The Masamune Lab has consistently worked on developing advanced therapeutic devices that assist surgery. It has developed surgical navigation robots that move while MRI and other images are being acquired, augmented reality systems that overlay medical images directly onto the patient, and new endoscopic devices that safely observe and treat deep inside the body. At the joint graduate school, the lab conducts research closer to clinical practice from within the medical school, and focuses on deepening regulatory science, which is essential for bringing research results to market. The lab welcomes students interested in the development and evaluation of medical device products.

Masayuki Yamato, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamato Lab studies regenerative medicine, with tissue engineering and stem cell biology as its two pillars. Regenerative medicine is a field that combines stem cell biology with tissue engineering, which reassembles the structure of tissues from cultured cells. Whereas molecular biology tries to understand life by breaking organisms down into their parts, the lab seeks to understand life through the practice of building tissues. Because this is an entirely new kind of medicine with no existing models, and because the lab believes that preparing the social environment is also important, it aims to build its own regulatory science.

Atsuko Deguchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Deguchi Lab develops therapeutic drugs that prevent or suppress cancer metastasis. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Japan, and metastasis to distant organs is thought to be its main cause. Through basic research, the lab investigates the mechanisms of the microenvironment that forms around cancer. Based on the clues found there, it develops new forms of drugs such as small molecule compounds, multivalent peptides, and antibodies. At the same time, it also works on developing diagnostics for stratifying patients, as well as validation models that assume actual clinical settings.

Manabu Tamura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Tamura Lab applies experience gained in neurosurgical practice to research on the evaluation of medical devices and drugs. Its work has covered functional neurosurgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, awake surgery in brain tumor operations, and the assessment of higher brain function to support patients' return to society after surgery. Drawing on experience with investigator-initiated clinical trials and with device development that combines medicine and engineering, the lab focuses on building mechanisms that allow clinical research to proceed smoothly. From a standpoint that integrates the humanities and the sciences, the lab builds the academic foundations of regulatory science and works on human resource development through collaboration among industry, government, and medicine.
