Takuya Hida
0 student voices
The Hida Lab is an industrial ergonomics lab that measures and evaluates the physical strain placed on workers' bodies. Ergonomic assessment tools that rely on human visual judgment have problems: they require knowledge and effort, and results vary between evaluators. To address this, the lab is developing a system that estimates joint positions from videos of work and automatically evaluates posture using machine learning. It aims to harmonize "comfort" and "work efficiency" in the workplace.

Keiko Momose
0 student voices
The Momose Lab is a biomedical information engineering lab that explores the mechanisms of human perception and judgment from bodily signals such as electroencephalograms (EEG) and pupil movements. Using signals that can be easily measured from outside the body, it develops methods to objectively evaluate how vision and hearing work. It also works on capturing reactions that occur without the person being aware of them. The core of its research lies in refining the measurement methods and analysis procedures themselves.

Chen Liang
0 student voices
The Liang Lab studies perceptual phonetics, using experiments to test how people hear the sounds of speech. Based on listeners' responses, the lab examines how they distinguish Japanese pitch accent and how fast speech sounds to them. It also looks at how hearing differs between native speakers of Japanese and learners of Japanese. The lab also carries out analyses using a corpus of everyday conversation.

Ruichen Cong
0 student voices
The Cong Lab uses human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence methods to study how to capture human behavior from data. It analyzes health-related data, aiming to lead to health support tailored to each individual. Information technology that supports learning is also a research subject, including building learning environments with the metaverse and VR. Its goal is to improve well-being, that is, to help people live better lives.

Jiateng Pan
0 student voices
The Pan Lab specializes in agent-based simulation. Agent-based simulation is a method in which many agents that act by simple rules are placed inside a computer, and what happens as a whole is examined. The lab also specializes in cognitive science, which deals with how people receive, remember, and judge information.

Taketoshi Sugisawa
0 student voices
The Sugisawa Lab brings the methods of data science into education. Its specialties are psychological statistics and educational measurement, and it uses statistical methods to interpret data collected from tests and surveys. The lab works with the idea of estimating, as numerical quantities, things that cannot be measured directly, such as academic ability or attitudes, from the way people respond to questions. The undergraduate specialized lab seminar and the graduate research supervision are offered under the name "Educational Data Science."

Hiroyuki Mishima
0 student voices
The Mishima Lab is an ecological psychology lab that investigates why people are able to act successfully in everyday situations. People adjust how they move their bodies on the spot, using information obtained from their surrounding environment as cues. The lab takes up actions such as passing through a narrow gap, driving a car, and handling a kendama (a Japanese cup-and-ball toy), and confirms through experiments what information is being used at those moments. It examines the relationship between action and environment based on ideas from ecological psychology, such as affordances and optic flow.

Eriko Sugimori
0 student voices
The Sugimori Lab is a cognitive psychology lab that investigates how human memory comes to change. Memories of whether we did something ourselves, and of where we saw or heard something, are not as accurate as we think. How easily such memory errors occur varies greatly from person to person, and the lab uses experiments to clarify the mechanisms and the differences. The lab also studies cognitive functions other than memory, such as the analysis of facial expressions.

Kazuki Sekine, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Sekine Lab focuses on the fact that people communicate using not only words but also gestures, gaze, facial expressions, and posture. The lab studies the mechanisms of this multimodal communication, along with its development and cultural differences. Focusing in particular on the relationship between gestures and spoken language, the lab clarifies the processes by which they are produced and understood. The lab combines multiple methods, including behavioral experiments, eye tracking, and brain measurement.

Ryota Nomura
0 student voices
The Nomura Lab is a theater cognitive science lab that measures and studies audiences watching stage performances and video. The lab records audience cognition, emotion, and bodily responses as data over time, clarifying how interaction in the theater unfolds. It captures these responses in multiple layers by combining several indicators, including facial expressions, gaze, blinking, heart rate, electrodermal activity, and posture. By integrating methods from psychology, cognitive science, and information science, the lab aims to quantitatively elucidate the sensibility (kansei) that emerges over time.
