Rieko Osu, Professor
0 student voices
Osu Lab is a cognitive neuroscience lab that investigates how the mind and body work, using the functions of the brain as a clue. In choosing actions and in learning, brain processes that never reach awareness, and that questionnaires cannot capture, play a major role. The lab therefore measures brain activity, behavioral indicators, and physiological indicators to shed light on these hidden mechanisms. Centered on embodiment, learning and plasticity, emotion, and sociality, it pursues basic research as well as applications such as rehabilitation and marketing.

Jun Kohyama, Professor
0 student voices
Kohyama Lab studies how neurons are generated, using the functions of stem cells as a clue. Its fields are stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, and it uses methods from physiology, neuroscience, and molecular biology. The lab generates neural cells from human iPS cells and investigates how the function of genes determines cell fate. These findings are expected to provide clues for understanding the mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders and brain tumors.

Shinichi Sakakibara, Professor
0 student voices
Sakakibara Lab studies, at the molecular level, how the brain is built and protected. Building a mammalian brain requires strict control of the division and differentiation of neural stem cells. The lab therefore searches for new molecules that regulate neural stem cells and investigates how proteins are regulated after they are made. The genes it has found act beyond the brain: in a collaboration with another university, they were also shown to support lipid metabolism in the liver.

Takuya Chiba, Professor
0 student voices
The Chiba Lab studies how aging works and develops ways to prevent it. This field, which approaches aging with the methods of molecular biology and experimental pathology, is also known as biogerontology. Aging is one of the major risk factors for cancer, lifestyle-related diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The lab therefore aims to lead to the development of drugs, Kampo and herbal medicines, and functional foods that slow aging.

Taichi Hara, Professor
0 student voices
The Hara Lab uses the methods of food science and life science to tackle the health problems of a rapidly aging, low-birthrate society. The lab searches for functional ingredients in foods and natural products and clarifies how they act on the body. It aims to restore the "mibyo" stage, in which a person is not ill but not well, through the power of diet before relying on medication. The goal is to apply these results to disease prevention and to improving quality of life (QOL).

Satoshi Yano, Lecturer
0 student voices
The Yano Lab studies, at the molecular level, how components contained in food act on the body. Its specialties are food molecular function and nutrigenetics, and it conducts its research as a member of the Food and Life Science lab seminar (Hara Lab) in the School of Human Sciences. The lab pays particular attention to autophagy, the process by which cells break down their own components and rebuild them. It investigates how processing such as fermentation changes this activity, aiming to lead to extended healthy life expectancy.

Issei Kato, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Kato Lab studies how people feel heat and cold and how they regulate their body temperature. Its specialties are environmental physiology and neuroscience. In environments where temperature and humidity are varied, the lab measures both the body's responses and how those conditions are perceived. The lab has investigated how the nose and fingertips sense moisture, and how the brain works in relation to the sensation of temperature. It also conducts research that contributes to heatstroke prevention, such as evaluating a technology that measures core body temperature with a sensor attached to the skin.

Jingyun Wang, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Wang Lab studies the link between metabolism and health in the body, using autophagy as a starting point. Its specialty is applied health science. The lab applies genome editing to cultured cells and examines the function of genes one at a time. The lab investigates how proteins involved in insulin signaling affect the process by which fat cells form and energy metabolism. It aims to find leads for controlling metabolic abnormalities, including obesity.

Mamoru Iwabuchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Iwabuchi Lab studies technology that helps people facing a wide range of difficulties, such as people with disabilities and older adults. It aims to expand the use of such technology and, through it, to realize a society that embraces diversity. The lab works on advancing information network technologies that connect people with people and people with things, and on supporting communication. In development, it builds on mainstream technologies such as smartphones, tablets, and the cloud, and proposes ways to promote adoption that keep cost and time low.

Atsushi Ogihara, Professor
0 student voices
The Ogihara Lab studies the social systems that support the health of all people. Its specialties are social medicine and health informatics, and it aims to identify and propose models of well-being communities and societies. The lab values dialogue and fieldwork, and conducts research in collaboration among industry, government, academia, and citizens. It uses a wide range of methods, including document and literature review, interviews, surveys, epidemiology, multivariate analysis, and mixed methods research.
