The lab studies the roles that metal ions play in biological processes by synthesizing metal complexes. Its research involves designing and synthesizing model complexes of biological metal sites and investigating their biomimetic functions. The lab aims to deepen understanding of the environments in which metal ions express biological functions, and to create artificial proteins with biomimetic functions. The Department of Chemistry lists the lab as a concurrent-appointment course of the Center for Education in Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The Polymer Reaction Chemistry Lab studies the development of synthetic methods for polymers that make use of the properties of metal elements, and the creation of functional polymers. By precisely designing new transition metal complexes at the molecular level and investigating their reactivity, the lab develops new polymerization catalysts. Based on synthetic organic chemistry, the lab achieves a high degree of control over polymer structure and also explores functionalization that takes advantage of that structure. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name 'Onitsuka Lab.'

The Precision Polymer Science Lab researches the creation of precision polymers with well-defined chemical structures, aiming to understand the essential nature of polymers (their polymeric nature). Large molecules with a molecular weight of roughly 10,000 or more are called polymers, and the nucleic acids and proteins that make up our bodies are also polymers. To find answers to questions such as why life chose polymers as its essential materials, the lab conducts research using precision polymers. The lab also aims to use polymeric nature to create high-performance polymers comparable to biopolymers.

The Polymer Synthetic Chemistry Lab aims to create polymer materials with new properties and functions by hierarchically controlling everything from molecular structure to assembled structure. Combining precision polymerization and self-assembly, the lab makes amphiphilic nano-assemblies and nanostructured materials that dynamically recognize and organize themselves in response to their environment. At the level of functional groups and atomic groups, the lab works on precisely programming the structure, properties, and functions of polymers. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name 'Terashima Lab.'

The Polymer Physical Chemistry Lab is part of the Department of Macromolecular Science, Graduate School of Science, The University of Osaka, and is also called the Matsumiya Lab. The titles of published papers listed on the lab's website include works on polymer viscoelasticity, birefringence, and dielectric relaxation. The faculty are Professor Yumi Matsumiya and Associate Professor Osamu Urakawa.

The Polymer Materials Design Lab studies polymer materials that incorporate mechanisms by which molecules bind to each other reversibly. Using host-guest interactions between cyclodextrin, a host molecule, and guest molecules as crosslinks, the lab works on making materials whose scratches disappear and materials that are tough. Research themes include self-healing materials, as well as tough materials, adhesive systems, actuators, composite materials, and repolymerization and degradation using enzymatic reactions. The name "Takashima Lab" is also used in the contact information on the lab's website.

The Polymer Structural Science Lab studies how biological molecular machines work, such as the flagellar motors that bacteria use to swim. Bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella swim by rotating tiny motors made of proteins. The lab investigates how molecular machines like this motor operate through atomic-level three-dimensional structure analysis and reconstitution of the molecular machines. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Imada Lab."

The Supramolecular Functional Chemistry Lab aims to create functional materials that combine the strengths of biopolymers (especially monoclonal antibodies) with those of synthetic polymers and low-molecular-weight compounds by forming composites of them. The lab extracts the essential structural features of biomolecules, designs and synthesizes molecules and polymers that take over those roles, and aims to achieve new functions in materials that assemble in a specific manner. In recent years, the lab has also been working on sulfur-containing polymers made from sulfur, a surplus resource.

The Polymer Solution Lab studies the conformations that polymers adopt in solution, the aggregates formed by self-assembly, and phase separation of solutions. Polymers in solution can adopt diverse conformations, and because of this conformational freedom they show distinctive properties not seen in low-molecular-weight compounds. The lab investigates their behavior from a physical chemistry perspective. Using scattering methods such as small-angle X-ray scattering and light scattering together with spectroscopy, the lab aims to quantitatively clarify structures and physical properties, from isolated polymer chains to aggregates and nanocomposites.

The Environmental Safety Chemistry Lab is part of the Safety and Health Management Division at Osaka University and conducts research on safety and on the environment. The lab analyzes trends in accidents occurring on campus and develops safety education methods based on the results. It is also pursuing research on polymer electrolytes aimed at inherently safe lithium-ion secondary batteries, among other topics.
