The Special Needs Dentistry Lab conducts research on providing dental care and oral health services to people with physical or mental illnesses or disabilities (people with special needs). The lab investigates the dental characteristics of people with disabilities and the mechanisms of their oral diseases. It works on a wide range of topics, from treatment and prevention methods and support for dental visits to building systems for delivering care. The lab also develops information accessibility support for people with visual or hearing impairments, and tools that help people with developmental disabilities receive dental care. Developing educational methods that help dental students deepen their learning about dentistry for people with disabilities is also one of the lab's research themes.

The Oral Cell Biology Lab conducts research that opens up the field of oral medical science from the perspective of cell biology, including autophagy. The lab's scope extends from elucidating fundamental principles of life to clinical applications. The lab studies how cells sense the presence or absence of nutrients, and the mechanism of microautophagy, one type of autophagy. As a research support branch, the lab is also responsible for maintaining shared equipment and animal facilities, supporting research across the entire Graduate School of Dentistry.

The lab is the division at the Dental Hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Dentistry that is responsible for research in medical informatics and for the introduction and operation of a commercial electronic medical record system. It is working on proposing next-generation medical records with medical-dental collaboration and hospital-clinic collaboration in view. Through international activities, it is advancing digital transformation (DX) across the whole hospital and the secondary use of accumulated data. It aims to realize the international circulation of dental healthcare information, and to build and put into operation mathematical, data-based disease prediction models, thereby contributing to better oral health worldwide.
