The Emerging Viral Diseases Research Group (Iwasaki Lab) studies emerging viruses, with a focus on Lassa virus. Lassa virus has a high fatality rate, and there is no established treatment or preventive measure. Using approaches from virology, immunology, and RNA biology, the lab aims to elucidate how viruses multiply and how they cause disease. The lab also pursues applied research that uses its findings to develop new diagnostic methods, treatments, and preventive measures.

The Zoonotic Bacterial Infections Research Group (Tsukamoto Lab) studies pathogenic bacteria that cause zoonotic infections. Focusing on Bartonella, the cause of cat-scratch disease, the lab investigates why cats do not become ill but humans do (host specificity). The lab focuses on the increase in blood vessels that occurs during infection (angiogenesis) and aims to clarify how factors produced by the bacteria work. The lab accepts graduate students from the Graduate School of Medicine, and welcomes visits from students of any background, including medicine, agriculture, and science.

The Pathogenic Bacteria Research Group (Abe Lab) analyzes the interrelationships among pathogenic bacteria, the host immunity that acts against them, and antimicrobial drugs. Its goal is to contribute to proposing better diagnostic methods and treatment guidelines. The lab studies the humoral bactericidal factors that act when bacteria enter the bloodstream, and the individual differences among pathogens. The lab is also jointly carrying out research that uses genome analysis results of carbapenem-resistant bacteria collected in Thailand.
